Two days ago, Liz, Kim, and Peter (a portion of our BBHB Board) were in DC educating about Informed Consent/Informed Choice as it pertains to the blood supply.

Today, we are looking for donors in Wisconsin for an urgent need. If you are able to help or know someone who might be able to help please pass this along.

1 in 70-80 people find themselves surprisingly in need of blood every year. You never know when it could be you or someone you love. Thank you for helping us help others!
xoxo ~ Liz

Canada isn't alone. The United States supplies roughly 70% of the world's blood and blood product needs.

Blood is a lucrative 32 BILLION dollar a year industry.

From an Idea to State Law = LEGISLATIVE CHANGE IS POSSIBLE! Idaho provided an important example in 2026 with legislation addressing directed blood-product transfusions.

But laws don't simply appear.

Someone has to identify an issue.
Someone has to educate lawmakers.
A legislator has to introduce the bill.
Committees have to consider it.
Questions and concerns have to be addressed.
Votes have to be taken.
And advocates have to remain engaged throughout the process.

Every legislative effort teaches us something that can help the next state.

That's why BBHB continues working state by state building relationships, educating policymakers, and helping people understand the issues surrounding directed and autologous blood donation.

One conversation can begin a much larger change.

Why Does BBHB Work With State Legislatures?

Having a medical option available and being able to access that option are not always the same thing.

That is why Blessed By His Blood has been engaging with state lawmakers about legislation addressing physician-ordered autologous and directed blood donations.

Our legislative work focuses on a straightforward principle:

When medically appropriate, patients and their physicians should be able to discuss available blood-donation options and understand whether those options can be accommodated.

That requires more than legislation. It requires education, physicians, blood establishments, healthcare facilities, patients, lawmakers, and advocates working together.

Our goal is to help bring those conversations to state capitols across America.

What Is an Autologous Blood Donation?

Simply put: your own blood.

An autologous blood donation occurs when a patient donates their own blood for possible use during a future medical procedure, when medically appropriate and arranged in advance.

It is different from a directed donation, where blood is donated by another person for a specific recipient.

Understanding the difference matters:

Autologous Donation: Your blood -> for you.

Directed Donation: A specific donor's blood -> for a specific recipient.

BBHB believes patients should be educated about the blood-donation options that may be available to them and empowered to discuss those options with their healthcare providers.

Our CEO/Founder, Liz James will be speaking at WAPF 2027: "BATTLE FOR OUR BLOOD: INFORMED CONSENT AND MEDICAL FREEDOM AS IT PERTAINS TO BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS AND BLOOD PRODUCTS"

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood or platelets—yet most people don’t consider this reality until it affects them or a loved one. For health-conscious individuals, receiving a transfusion can feel both humbling and concerning, given the importance they place on what enters their body. When circumstances allow, choosing a directed (known) donor instead of an anonymous one offers greater personal control, peace of mind, and potentially higher confidence in the blood’s quality and safety. However, this option—an important aspect of medical freedom—is increasingly being discouraged or denied by parts of the blood industry. Since 2023, a growing, coordinated effort has emerged to quietly eliminate this choice in states without legal protections, limiting patients’ ability to make informed, personalized decisions about their care.

What Is a Directed Blood Donation?

A directed blood donation allows a specific donor to donate blood intended for a specific recipient, subject to applicable medical requirements, testing, compatibility, and blood-bank procedures.

For many people, this is an unfamiliar concept. But directed blood donation is not new.

At Blessed By His Blood, part of our mission is to educate patients, families, healthcare professionals, and lawmakers about blood-donation options and the importance of informed conversations between patients and their physicians.

Throughout the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about directed and autologous blood donation-and the legislative work taking place across the country.

Education is where change begins.

What do your state representatives say about Directed Donation?

Did you know:
1) Directed (and autologous) donations have been legal under FDA rules for decades.
2) Idaho became the first state to explicitly protect patient access: House Bill 528 (signed March 2026, effective July 1, 2026) says providers/facilities may not prohibit a patient from using their own blood or a directed donor’s blood (with limited exceptions for emergencies, safety, or timing).
3) Similar bills appeared in at least 8 other states in 2026 (AZ, FL, IL, IA, OK, SD, TN, UT). Most did not pass.
4) California has long required hospitals to discuss directed donation options in informed consent (Paul Gann Act). This does not guarantee an easy process. You need to know your rights!

We are learning that most hospitals and blood centers still vary widely in how easy they make the Directed Donation process. Want to help us help the nation?
