Ps. 32:7

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

“It is a Psalm of penitence, but it is also the song of a ransomed soul rejoicing in the wonders of the grace of God. Sin is dealt with; sorrow is comforted; ignorance is instructed.” (G. Campbell Morgan)

I think the above statement is a great overview of Psalm 32. Morgan in just a few words encapsulates the range of emotions David expresses in just 11 verses. The exact time of David’s life when it was written is not exactly clear according to scholars, but to me that doesn’t matter as much as the example David sets when he has fallen short of walking uprightly. He repents, he puts his trust in God’s mercy, grace, and love, receives the forgiveness and reminds himself of who God is and worships Him.

Verse 7 has been a favorite of mine for years. It was put to music during the Jesus movement and I learned it as a young Christian. Since I was a child, I battled unnatural fear. The simple song taken from God’s word brought me through some difficult times in my life. I am so grateful for God using so many of these short worship songs like this in my life, but this one in particular holds a special place in my heart. Ps 31:22-24

22 For I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried out to You.
23 Oh, love the LORD, all you His saints! For the LORD preserves the faithful, And fully repays the proud person.
24 Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the LORD.

Several verses of this Psalm are quoted throughout the New and Old Testaments. Jesus and the martyr, Stephen, both quoted verse 5 at their deaths. David shares his sorrows, declares his faith, and exhorts others to be encouraged in the Lord.

In this life, followers of Christ are not immune to difficult situations. However, as we abide in Christ we do have hope. We can know peace and still have joy, because we know how our stories end.

Ps. 28:1-2

1 A Psalm of David. To You I will cry, O LORD my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my supplications When I cry to You, When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.

David demonstrates the need to continue in prayer until you hear from God. He is not satisfied to just pray empty words out of habit. He has walked with God and seen God’s mighty hand of deliverance and knows God’s character. Therefore, David is bold in his prayers and fully expects God to move on his behalf and praises God in expectation of what God will do and what God has already done.

When I went through a really long and difficult season in my life, I went to the Psalms often and was always struck by how often David would start off a Psalm crying out for deliverance and end the Psalm rejoicing and praising God in his time of need. I asked God to help me to be like David; to have the faith to praise God for who He is, what He has done, and what He will do.

God inhabits the praise of His people and I want to know and delight in His presence. So my prayer for us today is that we worship Him in spirit and truth. May we give Him the glory due His name.

Ps. 26:11-12

11 But as for me, I will walk in my integrity; Redeem me and be merciful to me.
12 My foot stands in an even place; In the congregations I will bless the LORD.

These are the last two verses of Psalm 26. Earlier in this Psalm David pleads his case before God. He proclaims his faith in God and presents his case against his enemies. David is once again in place where he is choosing not to avenge himself or cannot do so. Either way, David declares his innocence and confidence that God will deal rightly on his behalf.

There are times in our lives where we have been dealt with unjustly. And it is very tempting to want to rail against those who have wronged us. When those times come, we must take an account of what action is prudent. There are times to act and other times when like David in this case, it is best to do nothing and watch God’s justice prevail. Both of these choices require faith. When God calls you to step out and act, you do so trusting Him to guide and direct you. When God calls you to stand and allow Him to deal with the situation, it again takes faith. Praying for wisdom to know the proper response to injustice requires a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father and a heart willing to obey.

Ps. 21:1-2

1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The king shall have joy in Your strength, O LORD; And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
2 You have given him his heart’s desire, And have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah

David is known in scripture as a man after God’s own heart. At this time in his life, he has seen God move mightily to deliver him from his enemies and has been crowned king. As I mentioned earlier, David’s deliverance took 20 years. During those 20 years, David learned to trust solely in God’s ability to bring victory. That is why David can be so sure and full of joy in his declaration of praise to his Lord; the one who did not withhold from giving David his heart’s desire.

When our hearts are in tune with the Lord, we can rest assured we too will receive our heart’s desire.

Ps. 19:1-3

1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.

Ever notice how many people post their photos of beautiful sunrises, sunsets, rainbows, storm clouds, and other beautiful scenes that declare God’s glory? Some openly acknowledge their Creator others may not, but Rom. 1:20-21 puts it plainly:

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

God has made Himself known to all men through creation. There is so much to enjoy and for which to be grateful. We can be like David and partake of God’s goodness or we can stubbornly deny Him and miss out.

I pray you choose wisely and like David, see the goodness of God for all eternity.

Ps 18:1b-3

… will love You, O LORD, my strength.
2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.

Psalm 18 is one of the longer Psalms in the Bible. David has been through twenty years of waiting for God to fulfill the promise given to David when Samuel anointed him as a lowly shepherd boy. David has been through a period of testing to the point he almost gave up, but God…

The following is from David Guzik’s commentary and it lists the ways David came to know God as he came out of the twenty years of testing.

“ i. It is revealing that David can speak so eloquently about his God and what God has done for him. As Maclaren says, “The whole is one long, loving accumulation of dear names.” This means that David both knew God and had experienced God.

ii. In these nine titles, we see what God was for David:

- His strength, the One who empowered him to survive against and defeat his enemies.
- His rock, which indicates a place of shelter, safety, and a secure standing.
- His fortress, a place of strength and safety.
- His deliverer, the One who made a way of escape for him.
- His God, “my strong God, not only the object of my adoration, but he who puts strength in my soul.” (Clarke)
- His strength, but this uses a different Hebrew word than in Psalm 18:1. According to Clarke, the idea behind this word is fountain, source, origin.
- His shield, who defends both his head and his heart.
- His horn, meaning his strength and defense.
- His stronghold, his high tower of refuge where he could see an enemy from a great distance and be protected from the adversary.”

David’s relationship with the God of the universe was not just a head knowledge but an intimate heart knowledge wrought from walking in faith with God over an extended period of time. He could not know God in the ways he did had he not gone through all the difficulties David went through and repeatedly saw God’s deliverance in due time.

Let David’s testimony be an encouragement to you to continue on in your journey with Christ. Do not be weary in well doing and walk in faith that God will deliver you in due time as well.

Ps 17:15

As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.

This is my heart’s desire. In this Psalm, David calls out to God to judge between him and those who would do David harm. David describes them as men who are seemingly prospering and in the eyes of world, may even finding favor with God. However, David knows that God sees all and knows all. David is confident in his relationship with God and trusts God to deal justly with deceitful men. Verse 17 is the last verse of this Psalm. It is David’s declaration of faith and hope in God. He cares not for the world’s treasures, but he wholeheartedly believes God has prepared a place for him to live for eternity and David’s one and only desire is to live in the presence of His Creator God and to be like Him.

Ps. 10:16-18

In most of Psalm 10, the author lists all the ways the wicked seem to prosper, but the Psalm ends with this.

There are times when I too cry out to the Lord listing the ways evil is seeming to triumph and gloat, but God…

I remind myself the same God who delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, parted the Red Sea, healed the lame, and caused the blind to see never changes. He is still all powerful, all knowing, and ever present. Nothing escapes His watchful eye and He will in due time, provide His righteous justice for the oppressed. Our God reigns!
