Our relationship with food is a powerful one. Sometimes it can be imbalanced; sometimes it is a true pleasure. We associate so much with food! We often use it to celebrate, or even mourn; it is the connecting point around which we gather. How we individually & collectively source and harvest what we eat is a deep topic, as well. 🌎🌍🌏
Often, we use food to cope, or self-soothe. Sometimes we might skip meals- or we might take in too much. Sometimes we may reach for things that are just fast, or easy to consume; feeling like we just don’t have time to slow down enough to take care of one of our most fundamental needs.
Sometimes we develop cravings for foods (and often habits) that are not so nourishing for us, but to (very often unconsciously) stimulate or depress the nervous system. We may feel shame and/or develop health issues.
Personally, I grew up with food scarcity at my Mom’s, and was definitely affected by my Depression-era grandparents’ fears of lack…so I love to have a stocked pantry & fridge.
It helps me feel safe/secure; I feel plentiful and grateful. When I’m not doing well, and realize I’ve not been attentive to my body signals- I notice a resurfacing pattern of withholding food from myself (this looks like, “I don’t have time to cook something,” or, “I’ll just get xyz done first”)…procrastinating nourishing my body, until my blood sugar gets funky! That’s the time I drop into awareness of what I’m doing & ask myself what’s going on…
and what I need. It’s usually not *just* to eat or drink something, there’s an emotional piece or somatic aspect that needs my attention. ❤️🩹🥑🥬🍳🥥🧄🍲🫖
Food is ideally nourishment, and I see it as a form of energy that we introduce to our bodies. Everything from colors & textures to vitamins and minerals; food is complex and sensual. Noticing and observing this relationship we have with our nourishment, choices we make, and how we feel before, when & after we eat, is actually a pretty potent somatic awareness practice.🙂
What’s your relationship with food like? Food for thought.💗
