When people think about the NICU, the focus is usually on the baby.
Monitors. Diagnoses. Feeding plans. Survival.

And while all of that matters deeply… parents are experiencing postpartum too. 🤍

I said yes to being part of The NICU is Postpartum Too summit because I’ve lived this from both sides, as a NICU mom and now as a doula supporting families through it every day.

One thing I keep seeing, over and over again, is how quickly parents’ mental and emotional wellbeing gets pushed to the side in medical spaces. Families are expected to process trauma, make huge decisions, heal physically, navigate fear, and somehow still function… all while being separated from the postpartum support most people picture after birth.

The NICU does not pause postpartum.
It changes it.

These families are vulnerable. They deserve collaborative, family-centered care that sees the parents as patients in need of support too, not just visitors beside an isolette.

I’m really excited to bring both my personal experience and what I’ve witnessed supporting hundreds of families into this conversation. And honestly? I hope this summit creates more understanding between providers and families instead of feeling like they’re on opposite sides of the room.

Because emotional wellbeing is not “extra.”
Mental health is not secondary care.
And families deserve systems that support all of their healing, not just survival.

I’m incredibly honored to be part of this conversation. 🤍

I’ll be part of the Bridging the Birthing Gap™ Virtual Summit on May 15–16.

This is a space bringing together voices across maternal–infant care to talk about communication, collaboration, and what families actually experience across the system.

I’ll be talking about: The NICU is Postpartum Too
This topic is incredibly close to my heart because we often forget that parents in NICU are STILL experiencing postpartum. We are still experiencing the hormonal, mental, and emotional changes while navigating a traumatic experience.

Postpartum preeclampsia doesn’t discriminate. It can happen to any woman, even after your baby is born.

Know the signs, trust your body, and never hesitate to seek care. Your health matters just as much postpartum. 💛

A lot of people care about Black maternal health.

They share posts.

They learn the statistics.

They stay “informed.”

And that matters.

But awareness isn’t the same as advocacy.

Because it’s possible to know the numbers

and still not be listening to the people living the experience behind them.

Real advocacy asks different questions:

Who are we centering?

Whose experiences are we validating?

Who are we trusting as the expert of their own body?

Because when those voices aren’t heard—or are dismissed—that’s where autonomy gets lost.

That’s where respect breaks down.

That’s where decisions start happening to someone instead of with them.

And reposting alone doesn’t change that.

Advocacy looks more like:

✨ Listening without questioning lived experience

✨ Amplifying Black birthworkers—not speaking over them

✨ Respecting autonomy, even when it challenges comfort

It’s quieter than people expect.

But it’s more intentional and more impactful.

If you want a clearer, grounded look at what this actually means (and who we should be listening to), I break it down in my latest blog:

✨ What Advocacy Really Looks Like in Black Maternal Health (And Who We Should Be Listening To)

Read it through the link in my bio.

If this matters to you, this is how you move from knowing → to showing up in a way that actually supports change.

It’s World Doula Week, and this feels like a good time to talk about what a doula actually is… and isn’t.

Doulas aren’t medical providers. We’re not delivering babies or making clinical decisions.

What we are doing is supporting you. Physically, emotionally, helping you understand what’s happening, and staying with you through the experience in a way that’s consistent and centered on you.

Something else a lot of people don’t realize—there’s no universal standard for doulas. Training can look really different depending on who you hire.

So it’s worth asking questions, getting to know their approach, and making sure they actually align with what you need.

Because the right support can make a really big difference in how you experience your birth. 💛 "
