The process of healing in therapy, draws many parallels to the advocacy process. Much like any challenge we present to our therapist, similar steps can be taken for a community as a whole. For any change to occur, the first step is recognition and acknowledgement; If we don’t know a problem exists there’s no way to resolve it. Although many individuals may be at this first steppingstone, it’s still a step in the right direction. Patience is important throughout the process and for real change to occur each step must be understood and revisited time -and- time again. In regards to advocating for people of color, whether you’re in this process right now or engaging with a friend -or- foe and helping educate them... take a minute to slow down and recenter, finding your patience to give you strength. This is a long road and quite an exhausting journey, so be gentle with yourself and others, finding patience along the way.
Recognize and validate.
