Many Black women enter therapy carrying an invisible expectation: to always be strong. It’s a message that may never be stated directly, yet it is deeply embedded in cultural narratives, family messages, and lived experience.

As clinicians, we are trained to prioritize the care of others often at the expense of our own well-being. Yet, in times of collective harm, crisis, and prolonged stress, the imperative to “keep it moving” can create ethical tensions begging the question: What happens when our capacity to care is compromised by burnout, exhaustion, and our own distress?
