A Heartbreaking Update on Jojo’s Journey

We never imagined that after everything Jojo had already fought through, we would be facing another battle like this.

Just over two weeks after his surgery and the complications that followed, we finally got to bring our sweet boy home. Those five days were a gift we will forever cherish. We thought we were finally turning a corner.

On June 3rd, we took Jojo to what we believed would be a routine cardiology appointment. Instead, our world was turned upside down once again. Doctors discovered that his lungs were filling with fluid and that his heart function was continuing to decline. Within hours, we were told he needed to be airlifted back to the hospital.

After arriving, doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize him and determine the best course of action. For a brief moment, we held on to hope that things would improve. But three days later, Jojo took a devastating turn for the worse and had to be placed back on life support.

Not long afterward, every parent’s worst nightmare became our reality.

Jojo went into cardiac arrest.

For 38 long minutes, doctors and nurses fought to save our little boy’s life. For 38 minutes, our family stood helplessly as an incredible medical team refused to give up on him. By the grace of God, they were able to restore his heartbeat and place him on ECMO, a machine that is currently doing the work of his heart and lungs while his body fights to recover.

The devastating news didn’t stop there.

The following day, we learned that the prolonged lack of oxygen during the cardiac arrest caused severe injury to Jojo’s brain. Doctors believe he lost approximately 50% or more of the function on the right side of his brain. Shortly after, imaging revealed a significant stroke on the right side of his brain that also caused damage to surrounding brain tissue.

The LVAD that Jojo was scheduled to receive has now been postponed because of the stroke. His medical team will continue monitoring him closely and will reassess his condition in the coming weeks to determine if and when it can safely move forward.

Right now, we are living one moment at a time. We don’t have all the answers, and the road ahead remains uncertain. But what we do know is that Jojo has proven time and time again that he is a fighter. Since the day he was born, he has faced obstacles that most people will never have to endure, and he continues to show us what true strength looks like.

We are asking everyone who reads this to please pray for our baby boy. Pray for healing in his heart. Pray for healing in his brain. Pray for strength as he faces the challenges ahead. Pray for wisdom for his doctors and nurses. And please pray for our family as we walk through the hardest season of our lives.

If you are unable to donate, we completely understand. Sharing Jojo’s story is just as important. Every share helps us reach more people who can join us in prayer and support.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you for every prayer, every donation, every message, and every act of kindness. We feel your love, and it is helping carry us through these darkest days.

Please continue to stand with Jojo.

He needs all of us now more than ever.

With love and gratitude,

Jojo’s Family

Update:

Sorry to keep you guys waiting we received some devastating news and wanted to wait before updating until we knew what was going to happen.

As everyone knows jojo had went into cardiac arrest and had no pulse for 38 minutes.

The neurologist did a scan on his head and unfortunately he has sustained serious brain injury from lack of oxygen from the cardiac arrest mostly on the right side of his brain. They said that at least 50% of his brain is damaged could be more they aren’t exactly sure they also said they don’t know how much he will have to learn or how much he could gain back and they won’t know until he’s able to be awake he’s still on the ecmo.

Yesterday our little man had a significant stroke on the right center of his brain which killed the surrounding brain tissue. He was scheduled to be switched to the lvad today but is not possible now because of the stroke. They are highly concerned if they tried to carry through with the procedure his brain would bleed where the stroke happened and that would be a very bad thing. He isn’t able to move the left side of his body which is cause from the stroke.

The plan now is to leave him on the ecmo for a few weeks to allow his brain, lungs and kidneys to rest more and heal more. He’s still in a very critical situation but our baby is fighting! He’s hanging in there and isn’t giving up and neither are we! The doctor said it’s just a day by day situation now and every 24 hours is a blessing and a step towards the end goal. He’s not able to be listed for a heart transplant until we can get him fixed up and in therapy. You guys pray for us and pray for jojo as he continues to fight and carry himself through all these obstacles. He’s a fighter, we’ve raised our baby to never back down and he’s giving it his all. So we ask for continued prayers as this is going to be a very long journey. Thank you all !

We wanted to wait to say anything but around 2am this morning jojo went into cardiac arrest and his heart stopped… they gave him chest compressions for exactly 38 minutes but was unsuccessful until they got him surgically connected to a machine called a ecmo that pulls his blood out of his body and supplies oxygen as it goes back in.. his lungs aren’t working hardly, and are still filling with blood. His heart is very weak. As of right now he is stable connected to the ecmo. They won’t know how much damage was caused from his heart stopping for as long as it did for a couple of days. They’re also monitoring his brain function for seizures as well. This is a very very hard time for us as well as him yall please keep praying. Things aren’t looking good right now and he’s in critical condition but we’re still clinging to hope and praying God pulls him through and we ask that you guys do the same. Thank you all for the much needed support through these hard times. 💔💔😭

Update

Jojo isn’t doing so great right now, his breathing decreased dramatically and his oxygen dropped to the low 70/60s last night and they couldn’t get it to stay back up with high flow oxygen or the face mask so he is now back on life support.. they inserted another chest tube on his left side to help drain the blood off the left lung.. please pray as hard as you can for him and that he can get back off life support safely as soon as possible..
