Horse farrier mom trained and prepared her body for drug-free childbirth day in and day out around the farm. After an early water break, laboring at home for a while, she was disappointed to hear she was only 3cm dilated. She had walked over 5 miles. She was 100% effaced and baby was low- ALL good stuff. Dad who works as a firefighter was an excellent labor coach cheering her on and even helped their midwife catch the baby and bring it to moms chest! Drug-free birth of baby Selah the best ride ever!

I am so very proud of these two for a variety of reasons. First, they conceived against the odds, second they had a variety of labor and birth challenges, yet stayed positive throughout it all. Haley pressed on with the support of Joel and the awesome staff of WHA Jillian Tomol and several awesome nurses cheering her on! Special thanks also to Memrie Cox for capturing birth pics. Why is it the cutest kids come out posing for the camera that arm by the face/ chin… geez they are so stinking cute when they do that we can’t even be mad at them! Welcome to the world 🌎 Paul Drake… you are so loved!

We can’t always foresee challenges in childbirth, but we can all work together to empower and support couples to the best of our ability. We call this symbiotic birth, two different mindsets (normality + medical), working together to create happier “BIRTH” days! It is so important couples like Emily & Alex feel their wishes are being respected, even though varying opinions may be present on how to navigate said challenges. Emily had been in a traumatic car wreck in her young twenties that nearly cost her her life. She underwent numerous back surgeries to repair the damage. During pregnancy, she was advised she would not be a candidate for epidural. That’s why she found me. To try to learn how to manage contractions drug-free. Near term week after week she managed prodromal labor contractions. She also overcame multiple challenges of an early induction due to low amniotic fluid drug-free. Sadly, her body was not quite ready to labor and induction efforts were not resulting in cervical change. Later she learned her baby was also in an unfavorable position. The couple worked together with their medical team at Piedmont Athens Regional hospital to strategize the safest route of anesthesia if they moved forward with a C-section birth. Dad understood he would not be allowed to be present for the birth if general anesthesia was used, but the medical team felt it was the safest option for mom and baby. Multiple anesthesiologists were not comfortable attempting a spinal block due to the cement used to repair her L4-L5 vertebrae. Baby had been so creative with her asynclitic head position that the obstetrician even had to use vacuum to help deliver baby into her parent’s arms. We remain grateful for TLC & encouragement from the Piedmont hospital nurses, CNM Julia at Women’s Healthcare Associates in Athens, Ga & of course, her obstetrician and postpartum nurses too!

Let me take a moment to brag on these two hard working cuties!! In my 35 years, I have seen some couples work through many hurdles to give birth. These two powered through lack of sleep, overwhelming contractions, slow to dilate cervix, head position challenges, etc. One by one they overcame obstacle after obstacle together utilizing assistance, (me in & the couple in ) Kyle Christopher Iversen had to be my hands 🙌 while we labored together via FaceTime (such an awesome tool to connect folks in more rural cities with support)! And, with the help of some amazing nurses, a dependable peanut ball, position after position, trying epidural and even exaggerated forward inversion to help their little one reposition their labor marathon continued. Ultimately, with a teamwork effort they heard 9cm dilated 🥹and after being so close to baby finish line, their little one had decided she was done with the squeezing. The couple had to move forward with a medically necessary c-section for tachycardia (heart rate in the 200’s). I cannot be more proud of ALL they pushed through to give their daughter the best possible start to life. In the end, baby dictates the position, and despite a valid effort, their baby arrived via belly birth. Boy is she a cutie!

Congratulations are in order for all at staff who worked quickly to assist the Huntley’s on their natural birth in triage! There was no room at the inn (hospital LDR was full) and sweet Caroline was born quickly after arriving to Atrium Health Union West a short two hours later. Utilizing a team work effort the couple made late labor and pushing look easy. And, we ALL know it is NOT! Mom was extra relaxed and kept her game face on despite not having a normal room available to give birth in. Having trained in our no doubt they were prepared and ready! Thanks for choosing Your Birth Helper®️ for your happier “BIRTH” day!
