Sometimes your partner comes to you with hurt, and before they’ve even finished explaining how they feel, you’re already preparing your defense.
But I didn’t mean it that way.
That’s not fair.
You know how much I do for you.
And just like that, the conversation becomes about proving you’re a good partner instead of understanding what your partner is experiencing.
Here’s something I want you to consider: Your partner can be hurting without you being a bad person.
Their pain isn’t automatically an indictment of your character. And acknowledging their feelings doesn’t mean accepting blame for something you didn’t do.
Sometimes the most loving thing you can offer is a little curiosity.
Help me understand what that felt like for you.
What did you need from me in that moment?
How can I show up for you now?
And sometimes, when touch is welcome, it’s as simple as reaching for their hand and reminding them that you’re there.
You can care about your intentions and still make room for their experience.
Before you defend, get curious. 💜
And that’s a Stefanie Gem. ✨
Have you ever caught yourself defending your intentions when your partner was simply trying to tell you they were hurting?
