It's been a while since I have posted. I think we've all been a little distracted by current events. I'd like to share my thoughts a little with you.
Just a short time ago I decided to close the office until the beginning of April. I felt ill-equipped to have people at the office and I felt the urgency to encourage people to stay home. I read many accounts of people dying in other countries and the exponential statistics and did not want to contribute to anyone in my practice being in that category. But, out of the desire to cause no harm, I think I missed out on sharing something valuable with you. It wasn't the chiropractic adjustment (which we know has a lot of value in itself), but the knowledge of staying healthy. As I have tried to follow all the stricter and stricter guidelines of going out in public and washing everything and everybody upon returning home, I finally reached a point of frustration. I realized it is impossible for me to do that perfectly. It was then that I remembered what I had been taught in chiropractic school some twenty years ago.
Louis Pasteur (the Father of the Germ Theory) purportedly made this statement on his deathbed:
"The microbe is nothing. The terrain is everything."
Let that sink in for a minute.
The terrain he was talking about was within our bodies. I want to challenge you to do something different than everyone else. I want to challenge you to focus on the terrain of YOUR body and that of YOUR CHILDREN. I've been encouraging a lot of you over the years to do this very thing...and now it is more critical than ever. Here are some goals you could set for yourself:
1-WATER- Yes, you knew I would go there. Cells need to be hydrated in order to function optimally. I have a 2-quart canning jar on the counter that I fill and empty of water daily. Use whatever container you desire but focus on your hydration level.
2-NUTRITION- Shop differently that everyone else. Focus more on fresh or frozen produce and homemade broths and less on pasta, crackers and sweets. Most of you know what sugar and processed food does to your immune system. Get creative about your meals. Have your teens help you with meal ideas.
3-Get outside and get some SUNLIGHT! Vitamin D is SO important for us! Purpose that on days it is not raining that EVERYONE in the family will get outside.
4-Get EXERCISE. Breathing deeply helps the exchange in the lungs. On days you can't get outside, take advantage of some of the free yoga classes online which help you with proper deep breathing.
5-Start a garden. That will help you with #3 and #4 AND you will have the added benefit of #2 later this Spring.
6-Get off your technology! A lot of electromagnetic pollution is not what your body needs right now. Go to the garden and pray. That is what Jesus did.
7-Consider some DETOXING. If you are "stuck at home" this might be a good time to do a little cleansing. That can be as simple as adding cilantro to your diet or taking Epsom salt baths or as involved as a Master Cleanse.
8-Take captive your NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS. There are many ways to address this. Our family has stepped up our devotional/Bible study time. We have been using Jesus Calling as a guide and also reading through Jeremiah. We have started praying more. We have used our "happy" essential oils like orange, lime, grapefruit, Stress Away, and Valor. I personally use Valor and Sacred Frankincense daily. We have left chalk mail on our neighbor's driveways. We have made lists of singles and older people we know and have purposed to call some of them every day and check on them. We have been playing more games as a family. When we start feeling overwhelmed by negative information, we try to focus on someone else in need. Focus on GRATITUDE daily.
9-SLEEP! Get your sleep...and help your children do the same. If you are having trouble getting to sleep, consider stretching, turning off your technology early, and diffusing or applying essential oils. Our family has used a lot of different combinations. Lavender, cedarwood, Peace and Calming, Sleepyize, and Rutavala are just a few examples of what we have used at night.
10-The last piece of the health pie is STRUCTURAL BALANCE. I am working on a plan to get back into the office safely. My chiropractic association has created guidelines for how we can offer care for you during this time. Stay tuned for an update for when we will be back.
Take time now to make your own plan and post it on your frig. Get everyone in the house "in" on the plan. Ask for help.
In closing, I just want to say to all my patient family that I love you and I want the best for you. If I can help you at all, please reach out. We are all in this together.
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26
