Sometimes even with our best of efforts to stay healthy, injury finds its way to our body. Saturday we focused on common foot/ankle and knee injuries.
Heel pain from plantar fasciitis to knee pain can all be assessed and treated with physical therapy. It is important to figure out the root cause of your pain so that you can continue to do the things you love without it progressing into an injury.

Cupping is also known as myofascial decompression. It uses negative pressure forces to create lifting of the tissues creating space within the tissue layers to allow for improved gliding or mobility.
Injury, inflammation and overuse can cause tissues to become thickened and less mobile.
By improving blood flow and nutrient exchange, it will ease up adhesions, may help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissues as well.

Achilles tendonitis

Many of us have experienced pain behind the heel and into the back of the ankle with running or walking. This pain can create a significant limitation in our ability to participate in the recreational activities we love.
The achilles tendon connects your calf muscles (gastrocsoleus) to your heel bone (calcaneus). When they work synergistically, they push you up onto your toes and allow you to raise your heel off the ground when running, jumping and walking.
Heel pain associated with achilles tendonitis is primarily the cause of overuse.
Tight calf muscles and limited range of motion when you flex your foot also contribute to the development of heel pain.
*It is estimated that 50% of runners will experience pain into the achilles tendon at some point in their running lifetime.

To lower your risk of developing achilles tendonitis:
•Stretch your calf muscles at the beginning of each day. Stretching before and after your workouts is very beneficial.
•Ease into a new exercise routine, gradually intensifying your physical activity.
•Combine high- and low-impact exercises as this will help reduce the stress placed on your tendons (swimming is a great low-impact exercise).
•Choose shoes that provide good cushioning/arch support. You may find having a shoe with a small heel will help take some tension off your achilles as you rehab. Slowly transition back to flats so that your achilles tendon has time to stretch, gradually increasing the range of motion at the ankle.

How can PT help?
*Physical therapists are experts in treating patients with Achilles tendinopathy. They will help with the reduction in pain, restore strength, flexibility, and mobility to the injured tendon.
*Most importantly...they will help you restore your function and get you back to doing the activities you LOVE!

Virtual physical therapy sessions are a great way to be able to continue with your care as well as continue with your progressions. It allows me as a physical therapist to monitor your exercises and continue to give you feedback on the quality of your movement. The best thing is that it will prevent a delay in care and give access to those who are unable to leave their homes. If you have any questions or are ready to sign up for your virtual session, please feel free to reach out me.
