When your work requires you to hold space for intimacy, you must first master the science of it.

Whether you open a book to study systemic strategy and expand your education, or dive into a fictional world completely for pleasure and escape, reading is a profound act of mental preservation.

For the high-achiever, our brains are constantly wired to analyze, fix, and hold everything together. Picking up a book is one of the few ways we can intentionally shift our nervous system out of "problem-solving mode" and give it permission to just exist.

What are you reading right now? Are you reading to learn, or reading to escape?

We have six months of 2026 behind us, and six months stretching out ahead of us.

For the high-achievers, the over-functioners, and the structural pillars of our communities, this midpoint can bring a lot of hidden frustration. We tend to look back only to critique what we didn't finish, or we look forward and immediately start bracing for the next mountain to climb.

True mental preservation requires us to pause and reflect before we pivot.

This week, I encourage you to grab your journal, sit in a quiet space, and give your nervous system permission to process the journey so far. Use these prompts to check in with yourself:

✍ Looking Back: What did the past six months cost you emotionally, and what internal victories are you forgetting to celebrate?

✍️ Looking Forward: What boundaries do you need to establish right now so that the next six months are defined by presence rather than performance?

You do not need to rush into the second half of this year carrying the accumulated weight of the first half.

We are about to cross the finish line of May...a month packed with mental health "awareness" campaigns, holiday long weekends, graduation seasons, and endless corporate push before the summer slowdown.

But as high-achievers and the structural pillars of our spaces, we notice a common frustration...the calendar says we can slow down, but our bodies didn't get the memo.

We often expect a long weekend or a change in the month to magically cure soul-deep exhaustion. Instead, we find ourselves sitting in the quiet, feeling an undercurrent of anxiety or guilt because we don't know how to step out of high-functioning survival mode. We are so used to bracing for the next demand that peace actually feels unsafe to our nervous system.

True restoration isn't about crossing a date off the calendar; it is a boundary we have to actively choose.

If you are entering this new season feeling completely drained despite doing everything "right," give yourself permission to drop the performance of perpetual strength. You don't have to immediately fill the space with the next goal, the next project, or everyone else's summer plans.

Let the dust settle. Your worth is not tied to how fast you recover from the rush.

As a clinician, we work with individuals who are the structural pillars of their families, businesses, and communities. The hidden frustration is that your capability has become your cage. Because you are so reliable, people have stopped checking on you, and you have internalized the belief that you aren't allowed to have a weak moment.

You carry a quiet anxiety that your relationships and success are entirely conditional upon your perpetual strength.

But hyper-responsibility is often just a survival mechanism masquerading as a personality trait. True liberation begins when you realize that you do not have to perform to be worthy of support, and you do not have to carry the weight of the world to protect your place in it.

You are allowed to set the heavy armor down.

Tonight at 7:00 PM EST, I will be a guest hosts on "Real Talk with Tammi B & Company" to discuss the deeper roots of people-pleasing, where it comes from, why so many high-achieving professionals struggle with it, and how to recognize when “being nice” is actually self-abandonment.

If you are ready to stop over-functioning and start building relationships that don't require you to perform to keep the peace, tune in live.

The right people will never require you to dilute yourself to be loved.

As a psychologist, Dr. Savage will often remind clients that people-pleasing is not a personality trait. It is a protective armor we put on when we believe that our authentic self is a liability. We over-function, over-explain, and anticipate everyone else’s needs because we are terrified that setting a boundary will result in abandonment.

Alchemical, safe relationships do not require you to perform. They do not demand that you abandon your own boundaries to keep the peace. With the right people, your authenticity is not "too much"; it is the blueprint for the connection. You are allowed to say no, you are allowed to have a bad day, and you are allowed to just exist without the constant anxiety of wondering if you've done enough to earn your spot at the table.

If you are ready to stop paying the hidden tax of chronic niceness, let’s talk about it at a deeper level.

We are excited to share that Dr. Savage will be a guest on "Real Talk with Tammi B & Company" to unpack this exact dynamic. We are diving deep into the structural and emotional weight of over-functioning and how to finally break the cycle.

Sacrifice also means acknowledging the profound loss that remains in its wake.

Memorial Day is fundamentally a day of collective mourning. While the world moves into the celebratory spirit of a long weekend, festivals, and family BBQ's, many are quietly navigating the empty seats at their tables and the invisible weight of a grief that time does not erase.

True remembrance requires us to hold space for both the honor and the pain.

We cannot truly appreciate the magnitude of what was given without supporting the mental preservation of the ones left behind to carry the legacy. To those navigating loss, trauma, or the exhausting expectation to stay strong through the ache: your grief matters. You do not have to pack your weekend or suppress your sorrow to prove your resilience.

The most profound way to honor the fallen is to care for the living. Protect your peace. Allow yourself to mourn, to remember, and to give your nervous system permission to just feel.

If you are navigating heavy loss and need a dedicated sanctuary to process your grief without judgment, I am here to hold that space for you.

Have you ever laughed so hard that you suddenly found yourself crying?

Laughter and tears are deeply connected in the body. When we allow ourselves to truly laugh without restriction, we lower our defenses. That sudden shift can trigger the floodgates, unlocking and releasing the pent-up, repressed emotions we’ve spent months or years holding down. It is the body's natural way of shedding what no longer serves us.

Give yourself permission to find the humor, seek out the warmth, and laugh without guilt. If it turns into tears, let them flow. Your body knows exactly how to heal itself when you let the armor crack.
