That’s how Peter Simonson opened this one, and it stopped me. If you can walk — physically and with the time to do it — you’re more fortunate than you think.

His life hack: take your phone calls walking instead of sitting. He says he gets better mental clarity from it, and picks up an extra 300-1,000 steps a day just from calls he was already taking anyway.

There’s real research behind this, too. A Stanford study (Oppezzo & Schwartz, 2014) found walking boosted creative thinking output significantly compared to sitting — across four separate experiments, walking outperformed sitting on tasks measuring divergent, creative idea generation, both during the walk and shortly after.

Sometimes the best ROI is the free stuff nobody thinks to do. Stack a habit you’re already doing (a call) with one that’s basically free and backed by research (walking) — that’s the kind of high-leverage move I love pointing out on this show.

Almost 48 hours in. ❤️🎙️

The closer I get, the more I notice something strange: it’s not the hunger that’s hard. It’s the discomfort of feeling anything at all without reaching for something to numb it.

Food, in this moment, isn’t really about nourishment. It’s about ease. It’s the promise that this small ache of “want” could be smoothed over instantly if I just... ate something.

But here’s what’s fascinating — I know biologically I could push this to a week and come out the other side healthier for it. My biomarkers, my terrain, my current state of health all say so. I understand the benefits intellectually. And yet there’s still this dance between the part of me that wants to soothe a very temporary discomfort, and the part that knows what’s waiting on the other side of the artificial timeline I set for myself.

That tension is the practice. There’s a real art to fasting — not just the mechanics of it, but learning to sit inside that want without flinching. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have access to (context matters, of course — where you’re at in your story determines what’s right for you).

And the underrated part? It’s free. Better than free, actually — I started tallying up the six meals I’m skipping, and that’s easily north of a couple hundred dollars I’m not spending.

Discomfort, clarity, and savings. Not a bad trade.

Peter Simonson (President and Co-Founder of Juvent, and inventor of Medtronic’s TSRH-3D spinal implant system) shared this story on the podcast about his own mom:

She had a pelvic fracture that wouldn’t heal — two years old, flared back up, one of the highest pain indications there is. They watched her go from walking to basically bedridden.
They borrowed a platform from someone with osteoporosis and said, “Mom, what the hell, try it.”

Two weeks later: off her meds, no cane, no pain. Peter’s words: “Something’s going on here.” 👀
