In Loving Memory

John Robert Atkinson passed away at the age of 92 on April 2, 2026. John was born on April 10, 1933, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, to Thomas Smith Atkinson and Caroline Sarah Usher. He attended Falsgrave Elementary School and Scarborough Boys High School. He grew up living above his family’s bicycle shop, where he often worked to help his father. He moved south to the London area to start an apprenticeship with Vickers-Armstrong (Aircraft) Ltd as an aircraft weights engineer and attended Brooklands Technical College in Weybridge and Kingston Technical College in Kingston upon Thames. He’d been there only a few weeks when he attended a St. Patrick’s Day dance. There John met Gwen Jones, “a cute girl in a green dress,” and Gwen met John “a boy with hair just like my dad’s.” Gwen was 15, and John was 16. St. Patrick’s Day 2026 marked 75 years since that first dance, and they danced together throughout those 75 years.

After marrying in 1955 in St.

Jane Iris Coffee Sandlin, 95, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, in Liberty Hill, Texas, surrounded by the family she loved so fiercely.
Jane was born on July 18, 1930, in Loraine, Texas, to Ira and Mary Coffee. She grew up in Loraine and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at just 16 years old—an early sign of the sharp wit and determination that would define her entire life. She went on to attend McMurry College in Abilene and married Erle O. Sandlin, Jr. in 1951. Together, they raised six children while traveling the world as a military family before eventually putting down roots in Austin in the early 1970s, long before the rest of us realized how special that place would become.
Starting in 1976, Jane built a career as the Office Manager of Smith Surveyors in downtown Austin. She loved her work so much that she stayed well into her 70s, becoming “Miss Jane” to just about everyone who walked through the door.

Just a few years ago, many people had a knee-jerk reaction to the introduction of natural organic reduction (NOR), the form of disposition also known as human composting. The nickname certainly didn’t help open people up to the idea of using the totally new, much more environmentally friendly death care service.

Fast forward six years after Washington became the first state to legalize NOR and things have really started to change. One of the biggest surprises from the latest consumer surveys and death care industry data is the growing acceptance of natural organic reduction. While the number may still seem low, it’s the trajectory that’s impressive and suggests NOR will continue to expand.

Could Texas be one one of the next states to approve natural organic reduction?

The Idea of Environmental Legacy is Helping With NOR Adoption

A growing number of people are concerned about the environmental impact of death care services.

Acceptance for natural organic reduction is growing across the country. People are now asking, will Texas be one of the next states to approve NOR?
