Dear Supporters,
As we just honored the Independence Day holiday, I am writing to say THANK YOU.
Since the July 4, 2025 passing of the House Resolution 1 (known also as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”) which “defunded” Planned Parenthood nationwide, many communities were stripped of needed health centers and thousands of patients were denied access to vital health care services over the past 12 months.
However, for the past year, here in Maryland, Planned Parenthood survived and never turned away a single patient over their ability to pay for their care, and our services went uninterrupted.
This was our roughest year yet at PPM. I owe a sincere thank you to all of you as YOU did not let the defund efforts close our centers or pause our care for even one day.
No patient turned away; no closures; no layoffs.
This success is not a coincidence. It is the result of the collective, tireless work from our front-line health care workers, advocacy team, board members, volunteers, staff at the state health department, and supporters like you.
You, our loyal supporters, either through donations, advocating for PPM in your communities, or using your voice and collective power – ensured that our doors remain open to the next patient. You’ll ensure freedom in the months and years to come. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. I am deeply grateful for all you have done. Thank you.
As I reflect on the 250th anniversary of our nation, founded on the principles of freedom and liberty, it is sad that the freedom over one’s body is still up for debate and those opposed to comprehensive s*xual and reproductive health care are able to take it away from so many with the stroke of a pen.
We are aware that there is a long road ahead. But I am certain that as long as we keep working together toward the common goal of providing Marylanders with the most compassionate and comprehensive care possible, we will survive and thrive.
In this together.
Karen J. Nelson,
President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Maryland
