From Your Doula
I saw the way
you held your birth plan
like a love letter
to the day you would meet your baby.
I heard the hopes
between your words—
the first cry,
the first skin-to-skin,
the birth you had imagined
a thousand times.
And then…
the story changed.
I watched your eyes search mine,
asking the question
you couldn’t quite say aloud.
“Did I fail?”
No.
My sweet mama,
I need you to hear me.
I have stood beside births
filled with roaring contractions
and births filled with quiet operating rooms.
I have watched babies arrive
through laboring bodies
and through gentle surgical hands.
And never—
not once—
have I seen a mother fail
because of the way her baby was born.
What I saw was courage.
I saw a woman
setting aside her own expectations
because love mattered more.
I saw trembling hands
sign papers they never wanted to sign.
I saw tears that came
not from weakness,
but from grieving one story
while making room for another.
I saw a mother
who kept choosing her baby,
again and again,
even when it broke her heart.
That is not failure.
That is motherhood.
One day,
your child will never ask
how they entered this world.
They will only know
that from your very first moments together,
you chose them.
Over your fears.
Over your plans.
Over your pride.
And if anyone asks me
what happened that day,
I will never say,
“She had a C-section.”
I’ll say,
“I watched a mother become exactly
what her baby needed.
And it was one of the strongest births
I have ever witnessed.”
