Veterinary hospice and palliative medicine is about so much more than saying goodbye. πŸ’œπŸΎ

It is medicine focused on comfort, quality of life, and helping our pets continue to engage with the world in meaningful ways β€” even as their needs begin to change.

This month, I wrote about why the proposed recognition of **Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine as a veterinary specialty** matters so deeply to me, to the veterinary profession, and most importantly, to pets and the people who love them.

Right now, **pet families have an opportunity to add their voices to this conversation.**

The American Veterinary Medical Association is accepting public comments on the proposed specialty through **tomorrow, August 13 at 11:59 PM ET.**

If hospice or palliative care has ever touched the life of a pet you love, I hope you will consider taking a few minutes to share your experience and your thoughts. Your voice matters. πŸ’œ

There is a comforting thought that beyond this world, our dogs are welcomed with joy, softness, and love. 🌈🐾

I like to imagine a sweet welcome committee waiting at Rainbow Bridge β€” happy tails, open paws, kind faces, comforting places to rest, new friends to meet, and plenty of their favorite joys to discover.

For the families who are missing a beloved dog, I hope this little image brings a smile to your face and warmth to your heart. Their love stays with us always. πŸ’œπŸΎ

Happy Earth Pet Hospice is celebrating one year! πŸ’œπŸΎπŸŒŽ

One year ago, Happy Earth began with a vision rooted in compassion and connection: that pets nearing the end of life deserve the same wonderful support and care in their final days, weeks, and months that surrounded them throughout all the years before.

Over this first year, so many families have welcomed me into their homes and hearts. I have had the privilege of meeting incredible pets and the people who love them, listening to their stories, and experiencing the love that connects them. πŸ’œ

Every pet, every family, and every connection has become part of Happy Earth’s story.

I am deeply grateful for the trust families have placed in me. It is an honor to walk beside you as you care for the four-legged family members whose love is woven through every part of your lives. 🐾

Thank you for placing your trust in me and allowing me to stand beside your family during moments held with so much love.

Thank you for welcoming Happy Earth into your community. πŸ’œπŸŒŽπŸΎ

**Did a veterinarian help your pet have a peaceful goodbye?**

Veterinary hospice and palliative care can provide so much more than support during a pet’s final moments. This type of care may include pain and symptom management, quality-of-life guidance, support for families facing difficult decisions, and a peaceful goodbye surrounded by love.

The American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine is currently working toward recognition as an official veterinary specialty organization.

This matters because greater recognition can help expand education, training, research, and access to veterinarians with advanced expertise in hospice, palliative medicine, and end-of-life care.

The AVMA is currently accepting public comments, and pet families are invited to share why this care matters.

https://www.avma.org/blog/comments-sought-proposed-new-specialty

If a veterinarian helped your pet experience greater comfort, more meaningful time, or a peaceful goodbye, your voice can help more families have access to that same support.

The public comment period closes **August 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.**

Let’s have a little fun imagining what job your pet would choose! πŸ’œπŸΎ

Copy the sentences below, fill in the blanks, and share your pet’s first day on the job in the comments:

My dog/cat got a new job as a ______.

One thing they had to do was ______.

They ended their first day on the job feeling ______.

I’ll share Armani’s completed version in the comments to get us started! 🐢✨

I had a little fun creating this cartoon today. πŸΆπŸŒˆπŸ’œ

Dogs find so much joy in this worldβ€”and I like to imagine there are a few things they would happily leave behind when they arrive in puppy heaven.

My top three things that are definitely NOT there:

3. Thunderstorms β›ˆοΈ
4. Fireworks πŸŽ†
5. Nail trims βœ‚οΈπŸΎ

I genuinely smile when I imagine every doggy’s nails staying the perfect length all day, every day. No clippers. No suspiciously cheerful humans reaching for their paws. Just perfect paws forever. πŸ˜‚

Of course, every doggy would create a different list. Some would erase vacuums or baths forever. Others would gladly get rid of car rides, delivery trucks, or the confusing rule that some snacks are somehow β€œnot for dogs.” πŸ˜‚πŸΎ

What would your doggy’s top three be? I would love to hear what they would happily leave behind! 🐾✨

πŸ’œ A Little Happy Earth Update πŸ’œ

I wanted to share a new way for local pet families to stay connected with Happy Earth Pet Hospice.

Through the Happy Earth email list, I share occasional updates, new blogs, helpful tips, and gentle guidance for families loving senior pets, pets living with a life-limiting illness, or pets who may benefit from additional comfort and support. 🐾

My newest blog, *The Gentle Lessons Our Pets Leave Behind*, reflects on some of the lessons I have learned from more than a decade of walking beside pets and the families who love them.

The beautiful faces pictured here are some of the hospice pets who helped inspire the lessons shared in this blog. πŸ’œπŸΎ

Happy 4th of July weekend from Happy Earth Pet Hospice πŸŽ†πŸ’œπŸΎ

I hope everyone has a safe, peaceful, and meaningful holiday weekend with the people and pets they love.

I also know that our pets do not always follow the calendar, and sometimes hard days happen on holidays too. I will be available this holiday weekend for urgent end-of-life appointments for families whose pets need support.

Wishing you all a gentle and safe holiday weekend. πŸŽ†πŸ’œπŸΎ

With love,
Jeanette

I am so grateful to Outer Banks Voice for sharing a little more about Happy Earth Pet Hospice and the heart behind this work. πŸ’œπŸΎ

Talking about hospice and end-of-life care for our pets can bring up so many emotions, questions, and heavy feelings. I believe these conversations can also bring comfort, clarity, and support when families need it most.

Our pets become family. They walk with us through so many chapters of life, and when their bodies become tired or their needs begin to change, they deserve comfort, dignity, and support every step of the way.

Happy Earth Pet Hospice was created to help families in Northeast North Carolina and Southeast Virginia navigate this final journey with compassion, guidance, and love. 🌿

Thank you again to Outer Banks Voice for helping shine a light on this meaningful part of veterinary care.

I am so grateful to The Daily Advance for sharing my recent podcast episode on Voices of the Albemarle. πŸ’œπŸΎ

I had the chance to talk about Happy Earth Pet Hospice, the heart behind this work, and how Hospice & Palliative Care can support pets and the people who love them during such an important part of their journey.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Happy Earth and help spread the word about compassionate in-home end-of-life care for our pets. 🌈🐾

Jeanette Wilson, a holistic hospice care veterinarian, says helping residents and their pets during a difficult and sad time in their relationship the most rewarding part of her job.
