Michael Eugene "Smitty" Smith
It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Michael Eugene Smith (“Smitty”), who passed away on June 7, 2026, at the age of 72. Smitty was born on July 8, 1953, in Avoca, NY, to Jay (Art) Smith and Ida (Unada) Smith.
Smitty was a truly good man whose quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, and kind spirit left an enduring mark on all who knew him. He took the time to listen, to encourage, and to guide, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to cross his path.
Smitty was also a hardworking and talented entrepreneur who owned and operated Smitty’s Remodeling, Smith Ville and Smith Villa Apartments.
Above all else, Smitty was devoted to his family. He shared a loving and enduring marriage with his wife of 53 years Lil (Pulos) Smith and took great pride in being an excellent provider and mentor to his daughter, Jennifer Smith. As a husband and father, he embodied love, responsibility, and steadfast support. His devotion to his wife was especially profound. Their partnership was built on respect, loyalty, and deep affection, and the way he cared for and cherished her set a standard that inspired others. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support.
In his quieter moments, Smitty found joy in woodworking. With skill, patience, and care, he created one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, cutting boards and charcuterie boards for friends and family that carried deep meaning. Each item was a reflection of his generous spirit, his attention to detail, and the love he poured into everything he did. These creations will remain treasured keepsakes for years to come.
Smitty also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and carrying on the family tradition of making sauerkraut and maple syrup. He particularly enjoyed the tradition of “syruping off” and the unmistakable scent in the air when the season arrived.
Smitty will be remembered for the consistent and meaningful ways he showed up for others every day as a loving husband, a devoted father, a trusted mentor, and a loyal friend. His life was a testament to integrity, generosity, and commitment.
Smitty is survived by his wife, Lil Smith; his daughter, Jennifer Smith; his Son in Law, Corey Holler; his son Joseph Smith; his sister Bonita Montz; his numerous nieces and nephews; his brother and sister in laws; his many cherished friends and his dog Gus.
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents, Jay (Art) and Ida (Unada) Smith; his brother Jay Arthur Smith (Sheri) and his sisters Sandara Shill (Duke), Joan Sheeley (Burr), and Janet Benincasa (Richard).
Though he is deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the love he shared, the lessons he taught, the pieces he crafted and the many lives he touched.
