As summer approaches, it’s important to learn about safety at the beach! For instance, jellyfish can sting when touched — even after they’re dead. Most stings cause pain, redness, or tingling but aren’t emergencies. Rinse the area with vinegar, don’t rub it, and remove any tentacles with tweezers. A hot shower can also help with pain.
Get emergency help if there’s trouble breathing, swelling, extreme pain, vomiting, dizziness, muscle spasms, a large area affected, or a sting to the eye or mouth.

Stay safe! 🪼

Did you know that infants have more bones than adults?

Babies are born with about 300 bones! As they grow, their bones fuse together in a process called ossification. Once they grow up to be adults, they should have 206 bones!

Did you know that babies are born almost colorblind? To detect color, the stimulus has to be very bright, highly saturated, and fairly large. Research shows that the red–green color system develops first, followed by the blue–yellow system about 4–8 weeks later. By around three months, infants become fully trichromatic. Even then, their ability to see less saturated, subtle colors is still limited—adult‑level color sensitivity doesn’t develop until late adolescence.

Did you know? In 2024, the CDC reported that kids ages 8–10 averaged 6 hours of screen time a day, ages 11–14 averaged 9 hours, and ages 15–18 averaged 7.5 hours — not including schoolwork! 🫨💻
High screen time is linked with increased anxiety, depression, obesity, and lower social‑skills development. Recommended limits are:

0–2 years: none

2–5 years: 1 hour, co‑viewed

5–17 years: 2 hours or less

Open conversations and clear boundaries help kids build healthy habits. Encourage hobbies and activities that spark movement, creativity, and positive social interaction. ☀️

Bones play an important role behind the scenes in keeping children strong and healthy. Having strong bones in childhood helps set the foundation for better bone health in the future. We build most of our bone density during childhood and the teen years, and most people stop building bone around age 20. As we grow older, bones naturally become weaker over time. Parents can help kids build the strongest bones possible by making sure they get enough calcium, vitamin D, and regular exercise.

What happens at a well‑child visit? 🩺

Physical Exams: These exams help monitor growth and development and identify potential health issues early. They may include measuring height and weight, listening to the lungs, checking heart rate and oxygen levels, taking blood pressure, and examining the eyes, ears, and throat. Your healthcare provider will also administer any scheduled immunizations at this time. 🥼
