Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) is strongly connected to reading fluency—but it’s often misunderstood.

RAN is a task in which students rapidly name familiar items in sequence. These items may include:
• letters
• numbers
• colors
• objects/pictures

At first glance, this can look like a simple “speed” task.

But RAN is not the same thing as automaticity.

Instead, RAN reflects how efficiently the brain can access and coordinate familiar information in real time.

This matters because students with lower RAN efficiency often have more difficulty developing fluent, automatic reading—even when they receive strong instruction and become accurate readers.

In other words:
Two students may learn the same skills.
Two students may become accurate.
But one student may develop automaticity much more easily than the other.

And that difference can be profound.

In upcoming posts, I want to dig more into:
→ why RAN is so strongly connected to reading fluency
→ its relationship to reading difficulties and dyslexia
→ and what research has shown about intervention and whether RAN can actually be improved

I never shy away from a conversation about intentional systems thinking, particularly when it comes to dyslexia. What a great way to engage with decision-makers in several states, helping them to identify their individual influence for a collective impact!

Thank you, Curriculum Associates, for the invitation!

I'm back in Texas this week for the ASCD Annual Conference 25. Honored to be amongst education’s powerful voices and game-changing thinkers! I'll present “Family Literacy Engagement: Moving Beyond Compliance,” as part of the strategies offered by ASCD Annual to improve outcomes for all students and help attendees solve the tough issues facing their school or district. I'm excited to leave attendees recharged, energized, and ready to spark joyful learning in their schools or district communities.

Dyslexia, a cluster of symptoms, can significantly impact a student's academic journey. It often results in difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading.

Students with dyslexia may struggle with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. This learning disability can make it challenging for students to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment.

Understanding the profound impact of dyslexia is crucial for providing the right support. ALTA-certified professionals possess a high level of training and knowledge, enabling them to deliver the most effective instruction for students with dyslexia.
