In occupational therapy, we use a cultivated theme room for a pediatric sessions to create an engaging, supportive and motivating environment tailored to the child's developmental and therapeutic needs.
Here are some of the reasons:
First to enhance engagement with play based learning. Children naturally feel drawn to play and the theme room can help therapy feel more like fun than work.
It can also increase motivation. Because a themed environment can spark curiosity and excitement, encouraging active participation in the therapeutic process.

At New Horizons Wellness Services, we have appointments available for occupational therapy without a waiting list.

Great therapy never stops learning.

One of the most important parts of being an occupational therapist happens long before we step into the therapy room. We regularly invest in continuing education to stay current with the latest research, evidence-based practices, and innovative approaches to care.

Why does that matter?

Because every new skill, strategy, and clinical insight gives us more tools to support the children, teens, and adults we serve. It means we're not relying on what we learned years ago, we're continually growing so we can provide the highest quality care possible.

Our commitment to learning is ultimately a commitment to our clients. You deserve care that is informed, thoughtful, and grounded in the best available evidence.

At New Horizons Wellness Services, we're always learning so we can help you keep growing.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, remember those we have lost, support those who are struggling, and remind one another that help is available.

At New Horizons Wellness Services, we believe mental health conversations should be met with compassion, understanding, and without judgment.

Sometimes prevention starts with something simple:

Listening.
Checking in.
Asking how someone is really doing.
Taking changes in mood or behavior seriously.
Encouraging someone to reach out for support.

You do not have to have all the answers to make a difference. Sometimes, simply letting someone know they are seen, heard, and not alone can be an important first step.

Su***de is preventable, and there is hope.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a federal agency that works to improve behavioral health and expand access to mental health and substance use support. Each September, SAMHSA supports Su***de Prevention Awareness Month by sponsoring awareness efforts, sharing educational materials, and providing resources to help individuals, families, and communities learn about su***de prevention and connect with support.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or having thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

This September, let’s choose connection over silence and compassion over judgment.

Choosing private pay isn't just about how you pay for therapy. It's about having more freedom in how your care is designed.

When you use private pay, your treatment is guided by your goals, not by insurance requirements. That means we can spend our time focusing on what matters most to you, without the limitations that often come with diagnosis requirements, session restrictions, or pre-authorizations.

Private pay may be a good fit if you value:
• Personalized care tailored to your unique needs
• Greater privacy, since information isn't shared with an insurance company
• Flexibility in treatment planning and scheduling
• The freedom to continue care based on progress, not coverage limits

At New Horizons Wellness Services, we believe mental health care should be thoughtful, collaborative, and centered on the individual, not the paperwork.

📍 Services available in person in Beaverton and virtually throughout Oregon.

If you've been wondering whether private pay is the right option for you or your family, we're happy to answer your questions and help you make an informed decision.

Making friends, joining conversations, sharing, taking turns, and reading social cues can be challenging for some children. With the right support, these are skills that can be learned and strengthened.

Our Social Skills & Social Play Club provides a structured, engaging environment where children can practice real-life social interactions while being guided by experienced professionals. Through play, conversation, and collaborative activities, children build confidence, improve communication, and develop meaningful relationships that extend beyond the therapy room.

Every child deserves to feel included, understood, and confident in social settings.

We are currently accepting new referrals for our Social Skills & Social Play Club.

Groups are offered in person at our Beaverton clinic and are designed to help children strengthen the social skills they need to thrive at school, at home, and in their communities.

What if your home could support your nervous system, your routines and your goals?

Even something like a pool can be part of the conversation.

For some families, a pool may be a place for movement, play, connection and sensory input.

FOr others, it may bring considerations around safety supervision or family routines

That's where different perspectives can be valuable.

Monica Rankin, as a real estate agent helps families look at how a home fits their lifestyle.

New Horizons Wellness Services brings an occupational therapy perspective. Looking at how spaces and environments can support sensory needs, routines, regulation and daily life.

Together, we're exploring what it means to find a home that doesn't just look good but works for the people living in it. Because the right home isn't just about what it has. It's about how it supports the life. You want to live.

Did you know that ADHD often presents differently in women and girls?

Instead of hyperactivity, many experience:

• Chronic overwhelm
• Difficulty staying organized
• Emotional exhaustion
• Forgetfulness
• Anxiety
• Constant masking of symptoms

Because these signs are less recognized, many women aren't diagnosed until adulthood.

Understanding ADHD isn't about labels. It's about gaining clarity, accessing support, and developing strategies that help you thrive.

This Women's Equality Day, let's continue the conversation about recognizing ADHD across every stage of life.

If you or someone you love has been wondering whether ADHD may be part of the picture, our comprehensive evaluations can provide answers and a path forward.

Learning to write is about so much more than putting pencil to paper.

Before a child can write letters and sentences, they first develop foundational skills through drawing, movement, visual perception, hand strength, coordination, and fine motor control. Every scribble, line, and shape is an important milestone in their developmental journey.

When we understand how writing skills naturally progress, we can better recognize when a child simply needs more time, and when they may benefit from additional support.

At New Horizons Wellness Services, we're passionate about helping families understand the "why" behind their child's development. Through education, collaboration, and evidence-based care, we empower parents with the knowledge they need to support their child's success both inside and outside the classroom.

Whether your child is just beginning to write or experiencing challenges with handwriting, occupational therapy can help build the skills needed for greater confidence, independence, and academic success.

If you have questions about your child's handwriting, fine motor skills, or school readiness, we're here to help.

Schedule an occupational therapy evaluation today.

Back-to-school season often means new routines, packed calendars, and juggling more responsibilities. While many parents are helping their children adjust, some are quietly struggling to keep up themselves.

Do you constantly underestimate how long things will take? Find yourself running late, missing deadlines, or feeling overwhelmed by everyday schedules, even when you're trying your best?

It may not be poor time management. It could be ADHD time blindness.

Time blindness is a common executive functioning challenge that affects many adults with ADHD. It changes the way the brain perceives time, making planning, prioritizing, and transitioning between tasks much more difficult. It's not laziness, and it's not a lack of effort.

The good news is that there are practical strategies that can help.

Our latest blog explains what ADHD time blindness is, how it affects daily life, and how occupational therapy can help you build routines, improve time awareness, and regain confidence in managing your day.
