Safety checklists can be helpful, but they are limited.

Individualized environmental modifications have been shown to reduce fall risk by up to 40%

A checklist answers the question:
“Is something present?”

Safer to Stay answers the question:
“How is this person actually using their space and where does risk show up in real life?”

Here’s the difference:
Checklists are static.
They capture a moment in time.

Fall risk changes with fatigue, routines, medications, vision, footwear, and confidence

Checklists don’t observe movement.

Checklists can’t prioritize.

Checklists don’t adapt to behavior.

Checklists don’t address readiness.

Checklists lack clinical judgment.

A licensed physical therapist brings movement analysis, fall-risk awareness, and real-world pattern recognition that no form can replicate.

In short, checklists identify items and Safer to Stay identifies risk patterns.

Did you know?

That small lip at a doorway can make a big difference in how safely someone moves through their home.

Door threshold ramps can help create a smoother transition between rooms, entryways, garages, patios, and porches, especially for someone using a walker, wheelchair, scooter, or simply trying to avoid tripping.

Sometimes the safest home updates are not major renovations. They are small, thoughtful changes that make everyday movement easier and more confident.

At Safer to Stay, we look at the home through a movement and safety lens to help families identify practical ways to support aging in place.

A small change today can make home safer tomorrow.

Most people think of grab bars and fall prevention when they think about a home safety assessment.
But what about fire safety?
As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and founder of Safer to Stay, I believe a truly safe home is one that prepares for both everyday challenges and unexpected emergencies.

During my home assessments, I encourage families to consider questions like:
🔥 Are smoke alarms installed and working where they should be?
🔥 Is there a clear path to exit the home if mobility is limited?
🔥 Could clutter, rugs, or furniture slow down an emergency escape?
🔥 Are cooking areas and space heaters being used safely?
🔥 Does everyone in the home know the fire escape plan?

For older adults, changes in mobility, balance, vision, hearing, or cognition can make escaping a fire more difficult. Taking a few simple steps today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow.

Creating a safer home isn't just about preventing falls, it's about planning for every aspect of independent living.

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

A simple high-contrast strip on the edge of each stair can make steps easier to see and help reduce the risk of missteps and falls particularly for older adults, people with vision changes, or anyone navigating stairs in low light.

Home safety isn't always about major renovations. Often, it's about thoughtful details that improve confidence and independence every day.

At Safer to Stay, we focus on practical, personalized recommendations that help people remain safer in the homes they love.

A bathroom remodel is more than choosing tile, paint colors, and fixtures.
It's an opportunity to plan for the future.

This week I worked on a scaled bathroom layout to evaluate space, clearances, and accessibility considerations before construction begins.

Small design decisions made today can have a significant impact on safety, independence, and usability years from now.

One of the biggest benefits of having a physical therapist evaluate a space is that we don't just look at the room, we look at the person who will be using it.

Mobility, balance, strength, transfers, vision, endurance, and daily routines all influence how a bathroom should be designed.

A beautiful remodel can still be challenging to navigate if there isn't adequate space around the toilet, room for a walker, or consideration for future needs.

Planning ahead can help avoid costly renovations later and support aging in place for years to come.

At Safer to Stay, I help individuals and families bridge the gap between home design and functional living so their homes can continue to support independence, safety, and quality of life.

At some point in our lives, many of us will unfortunately experience a fall.

But very few people are ever taught what to do after it happens.
Come learn:
✔️ How to safely recover from a fall
✔️ When to call for help
✔️ Common mistakes that can make injuries worse
✔️ Simple strategies that may help reduce future falls

This presentation is designed to help older adults, caregivers, and families feel more prepared, confident, and safe at home.

Because falls don’t just happen to “other people.” And knowing how to respond matters.

Hope to see you there!

Maybe healthcare workers don’t need puppy yoga.

Maybe we need “Dog CPR.” 🐶🚑

Not because the dogs help us practice…
…but because it’s impossible to stay stressed when a dog is interrupting compressions for kisses and emotional support.

Honestly, there may be no better reminder during CPR training than this:
Stay calm.
Keep going.

And if all else fails, get yourself a dog for morale support. 😂
