Some family history stories carry more weight than others.

Not because the records are unclear—but because what they reveal is difficult.

Moments of trauma, conflict, or loss don’t just raise questions about accuracy.

They raise questions about how to write the story at all.

What should be included?
How much detail is appropriate?
Who is the audience for this version of the story?

This video explores those questions and how to approach them with care.

Very cool detail during the Grand Review 161 years ago, with great signs, bunting, umbrellas for shade, telegraph pole (in front of the Telegraph Office), and people in windows, on balconies, and a lone dude on Willard’s roof below the huge American flag! Full stereo plate linked in the first comment.

Those stories will live on in the retelling or writing. This holiday weekend, share at least one story from your family's past with a younger generation.

Built by Joseph Jr. in the late 1830s, today's standing house on Antietam National Battlefield’s Sherrick Farm fashions many Greek revival style elements. Confederate troops of General Toombs' Brigade were positioned near the house as it was important to prevent Union soldiers from using the narrow ravine that led between the Otto Farm and to the crossing at the Lower Bridge (Burnside Bridge).

This Memorial Day, we honor those who stood ready to answer the call. 🎖️ Even if your ancestor never saw a battlefield, their WWI Draft Card is a time capsule that captures their world at the time - from the color of their eyes to the name of the person they loved most.

Your ancestor didn't just live through history—they made it. Help us honor the everyday heroes in your family by adding their story to the Stories of US: https://www.ancestry.com/stories-of-us

America250 is more than a national celebration. It is an opportunity for people to discover how their own families fit into the American story.

As interest in U.S. history continues to grow leading up to 2026, genealogy and family history organizations are uniquely positioned to help communities make meaningful personal connections to the past.

To help support those efforts, we created a free America250 toolkit filled with program ideas, partnership suggestions, outreach strategies, and planning resources designed for genealogy organizations and societies.
