Racing IRONMAN California this Sunday? Don’t make these 3 mistakes. I raced it last year.

1. Letting the swim set your bike pace. The downriver swim is fast. You’ll feel great getting on the bike. That’s the current, not your fitness. Ride the first hour easier than you want to.

2. Riding the flat course too hard. No hills means no coasting. You pedal for 112 miles. Pick an effort you can hold all day, and eat on a timer from the first 20 minutes. You’re fueling for the marathon, not for mile 30 of the bike.

3. It is not an easy race. It is an Ironman. Even with the down river swim you still need to ride 112 miles, and run a marathon. Each of those as a single event are hard.

Last year I got sick and dehydrated out there and ran a full mile the wrong way. I still finished. When it gets hard: slow down, fuel, reset, keep moving.

Trust your training. The work is done. Go enjoy the day you earned.

Racing Sunday? Drop your goal below. I’ll be cheering. Know someone racing? Send this to them.

David just finished his first marathon. Chicago. 26.2 miles.

A first marathon isn’t built on race day. It’s built in the many months before it.

Here’s what we focused on:

The base. Easy miles first, mostly Zone 2. Fitness you can build on without getting hurt, then we added in speed and pacing.

Pacing. The first 10K in Chicago feels easy. The plan was to let it. Patience early so he had legs late.

Fueling. Same breakfast, same gels, same timing he practiced on his long runs. Nothing new on race day.

Mindset. Something always gets hard in a marathon. He decided ahead of time how he’d respond replacing any negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

Proud of you, David. You earned this one.

Training for your first marathon? Tell me which race below.

I didn't write a word of this.

Every line in this post comes from an athlete I coach. Copied word for word from their reviews.

The one that surprised me most was Chris's. He didn't lead with his time. He said I got him in the best shape of his life, safely. At 58, after 25 years without running, that meant more to me than his 5:14.

Read them again. Almost none of them talk about workouts.

They talk about busy schedules. Life getting in the way. Starting at 58. Staying healthy while chasing big goals.

That's the real job of a coach. Not the calendar. The thinking behind it.

I coach Ironman triathletes, ultra runners and runners who want to qualify for Boston.

The question I get all the time: "Coach, what do you actually eat before a long run?"

Here are my go-tos:
→ Oatmeal and berries
→ Pancakes and banana
→ Rice with salt and honey
→ Short on time? Bagel and banana
Plus an electrolyte drink every time.

The goal isn't a perfect meal. It's filling the tank with carbs, using foods you know sit well.

Most running injuries aren't bad luck.

They happen when the training load is more than your body can handle.

Miles build your engine. Strength builds the body that carries it.

Strong muscles absorb the load. Strong bones handle the impact. Strong joints keep you moving well, mile after mile.

You don't need hours in the gym. Two short sessions a week. Do the basics well. Stay consistent.

Strength won't make you injury-proof. But it makes you a lot harder to break.

That's how you stay in the game for the long run.

Save this for your next training week. And tag the training partner who keeps skipping strength day.

8,019 runners ran a Boston qualifier this year. They're not going to Boston.

If you got in, congratulations. Super happy for you.

If you got a no, I get it. You did the work and it still wasn't enough. That's frustrating. But it's not a judgment on you.

The cutoff moves every year: 5:29, 6:51, 4:34, and now 5:17.

Don't train for the standard. Train for acceptance.

My free Built To Boston calculator gives you a goal time with room to spare. Link in bio.

Want help getting there? DM me "BOSTON" and let's talk about Built For Boston coaching.
