I used to think the stitches fixed the laceration. Not sure what mechanism was going through my mind. Regardless of whether we use sutures, staples, glue, steri strips or band aids—all our methods of closure primarily do one simple thing—bring the two wound edges together, and enable the body to heal itself. Platelets and clotting factors stop the bleeding, neutrophils and the immune system respond to fight infection that may be invading, keratinocytes (skin cells) migrate across the wound to begin skin formation, followed by Fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) that synthesize collagen, rebuilding the skin. A bit of a miracle. And way more beautiful and sophisticated than my brute Nylon stitch.
Those are my hands putting in those stitches, years ago.
