Does Lipedema return after surgery? A common question I receive all the time.

For the majority of patients, treatment is be a major turning point in improving symptoms, mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.

True recurrence is uncommon and is typically seen only in a very small percentage of patients, often those with more aggressive forms of Lipedema.

Even in those rare cases, it’s not the end of the road. Through our Diagnostic & Preventative Center we’ll re-evaluate, bring in outside specialists when needed, and determine if and when a follow-up surgery makes sense, because Lipedema is a condition that requires lifelong management, and our care is built to support you through every stage of that journey.

🔎 June is Lipedema Awareness Month. Lipedema is far more than a cosmetic concern. It is a chronic medical condition that disproportionately affects women and is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed for years.

Many patients are told their symptoms are simply related to weight gain, lifestyle, or aging, when in reality they are living with pain, heaviness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, and progressive changes that do not improve with diet and exercise alone.

Because awareness remains limited, patients frequently spend years searching for answers before receiving a proper diagnosis.

Education is one of the most important steps toward earlier recognition, compassionate care, and meaningful treatment options that can help improve mobility, comfort, and quality of life.

🔎 When I treat lipedema in the forearm, I’m focused on restoring both contour and function in an area that’s often overlooked but significantly impacted by disease progression.

During surgery, I treat the forearm circumferentially, working around the full arm in different positions to make sure I’m addressing all affected areas, careful to avoid regions where there is no fat and muscle attaches directly to fascia.

Lipedema treatment in the arms requires a layered approach and when done carefully, it can make a meaningful difference in both comfort and contour for the patient.

When treating this circumferential area, the approach has to be comprehensive. I divide it into three key zones: anterior, posterolateral, and medial-lateral.

Technique is everything here. Strategic positioning and precise access points allow us to stay within a defined safe plane, helping protect lymphatic pathways, nerves, and tendons, while minimizing the risk of complications.

As we head into Lipedema Awareness Month this June, we want to thank Good Things Utah for highlighting the important initiatives ahead for The Roxbury Institute.

We discussed The Roxbury Institute’s newly launched supplement program, thoughtfully developed to support metabolism, lymphatic health, and balanced inflammatory response to optimize health and wellness.

We also shared details about the upcoming Lipedema Summit, where I’m proud to serve as a featured co-host alongside Erika Schlick. The summit includes a virtual event taking place June 10–12, as well as a live, in-person experience in collaboration with the Lipedema Society.

I want to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers in our community. 💐

Lipoedema is a hormonally-driven condition that almost exclusively affects women, and many experience symptom progression during major hormonal shifts like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

For so many mothers, pregnancy can bring increased swelling, pain, inflammation, and changes that feel difficult to explain or navigate.

Today, we want to recognize the strength of the women living with lipedema, the mothers supporting daughters with the condition, and the caregivers who continue showing up for others while managing their own challenges.

Wishing you a day filled with compassion, support, and appreciation.
