Just a reminder that our Mindfulness Made Easy introductory mindfulness meditation class is happening in just a few days.

A lot of people are interested in mindfulness these days, but many still wonder:
“What actually happens in a mindfulness class?”

This class is designed to make meditation feel approachable, practical, and human.

Together, we’ll explore:
• guided mindfulness meditation
• simple ways to work with stress and distraction
• gentle walking or movement meditation
• how mindfulness supports emotional balance and clarity
• ways to bring awareness into ordinary daily routines

We’ll also talk honestly about the challenges people encounter in meditation — busy minds, restlessness, self-judgment, frustration — and how mindfulness practice can help us relate to those experiences with greater patience and kindness.

No previous meditation experience is needed. You do not need to “be good at meditation” to begin.

Led by Ryan Barfoot of the Insight Meditation Community of Bloomington-Normal (IMCBN).

Space is limited, so registration is highly encouraged.

Large analyses support mindfulness as a therapeutic tool. A 2018 review supported by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health examined 142 groups with over 12 000 participants and found that mindfulness‑based approaches were better than no treatment and as effective as established therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and antidepressants for treating anxiety and depression. Mindfulness‑Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) also helps prevent relapse of major depression.

Do you think mindfulness should be offered alongside traditional therapy for anxiety and depression? Why or why not?

Mindfulness isn’t limited to formal meditation—it can infuse everyday activities. The U.K.’s National Health Service explains that mindfulness involves paying attention to what’s happening inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment. It emphasizes reconnecting with our bodies, noticing sights, sounds, smells and tastes, and seeing thoughts as “mental events” that come and go. This kind of awareness helps us stand back from our thoughts, notice patterns and deal with stress more productively. Mindfulness‑based therapies are even recommended by the U.K.’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for treating less‑severe depression.

What mundane activity—drinking tea, washing dishes, walking the dog—could you turn into a mindfulness practice today?

Awareness of ourselves and the world around us – sometimes called mindfulness – can improve our mental wellbeing.
