✨ Graduate Spotlight: Sarah

For Sarah, it was the name Nourishing Heart that first spoke to her: "A nourished heart. That's what I needed deeply at the time. Well, always..."

At the time, Sarah was also expanding her work as a retreat facilitator and wanted to deepen what she could offer through a richer personal practice and greater knowledge of yoga. As she puts it, Nourishing Heart came to her at just the right moment.

What surprised her most was the depth of connection that developed within the training: "It was more than a yoga teacher training. I believe we all felt truly seen in our being. I learned how to hold people with more reverence from my teacher Matece."

And the training didn't end when she graduated: "The training has continued to vibrate through my everyday life. I continue to pick up our training materials and go over them. My yoga practice looks very different since my training, and I weave in the wisdom daily."

These days, Sarah is a stay-at-home mom, and we love the way she describes how yoga has moved into this season of her life: "My son is my altar and yoga is my guide on navigating motherhood with presence."

And we're especially happy to share that Sarah is back on the Nourishing Heart sub list! So keep an eye on the schedule; you may get the chance to practice with her at the studio again soon.

At NHY, yoga is about being seen, developing a relationship with your body and breath, and finding a practice that meets you as you are. We value thoughtful teaching, adaptability, curiosity, and community, creating space for every body, history, and reason for practicing.

We’ve been offering our 200-hour teacher training for over 10 years, and each cohort is a unique and powerful gathering.

This training unfolds on two levels.

At the level of the mind, we study the science, philosophy, and methodology of what it means to be a skillful teacher and learning to offer classes that are intelligent, safe, and transformative.

At the level of the heart, we open to the fullness of what yoga truly is as a practice of self-realization. Here, we do the deeper inner work of transformation and learn to hold ourselves with care as we move through personal change that prepares us to hold space for others in the same way.

We’re so excited to begin another journey with an incredible group of people in 2027.

If you’re curious about joining us, come to our Info Session on Friday, September 4 at 6 p.m. We’ll walk through the program, what to expect, and answer any questions you have.

You don’t need to be sure, just curious.

Register through the link in our bio.

Shelley is back at Nourishing Heart, and this time, we get to keep her!

Some of you may remember Shelley from workshops she taught with us a few years ago while she was living in Indianapolis. Well, Shelley has officially made Bloomington home, and we are so happy to welcome her back to NHY as part of our regular teaching community.

Shelley brings a really special combination of experience to the mat. She is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher, Reiki Master, Certified Complex Trauma Professional, and certified EMDR trauma therapist and consultant. Her work is deeply informed by polyvagal theory and current neuroscience, and all of her classes are taught through a trauma-informed lens.

For Shelley, yoga isn't simply about moving the body. It's an opportunity to better understand our nervous systems, develop tools for self-regulation, release held tension, and build our capacity to meet the stresses of life with a little more steadiness and resilience.

You'll get your first chance to practice with her this Wednesday, August 19 at 6pm for Somatics + Slow Flow. This gentle practice weaves together somatic movement, breathwork, yin and hatha yoga, self-soothing tapping, polyvagal practices, and deep rest. It's accessible to all levels and especially lovely for anyone looking for a practice that supports nervous system regulation and embodied awareness.

Then beginning in September, you'll find Shelley on our weekly schedule:
✨ Somatics + Slow Flow — Tuesdays at 12pm

And we're also very excited to introduce Shelley's new monthly offering:
✨ Yoga for Mental Wellness — select Sundays at 3pm
September 20 • October 11 • November 15 • December 13

We feel incredibly fortunate to have someone with Shelley's depth of experience bridging the worlds of yoga, mental health, and nervous system care right here at NHY.
Welcome home, Shelley. We're so glad you're here. 🪷

How well do you really know how to rest?

Our final Studies in Iyengar workshop with Steph DeBoer turns toward something most of us could use a little more practice with: finding ease in rest.

Ease in Rest with Restorative Poses explores how we can remain attentive and aware of the body and mind even as we soften. Through the precision and thoughtful use of support that characterize Iyengar Yoga, Steph will guide participants through a range of restorative postures along with introductory breathwork.

Rest, after all, isn't necessarily something that comes naturally simply because we stop moving. It, too, can be a practice.

This is the third and final workshop in Steph's Studies in Iyengar series, and one of your last opportunities to practice with her before she heads to Hong Kong for the fall semester. She'll be back with us in January, but if you've been curious about Iyengar Yoga, now is a wonderful time to experience this rich tradition for yourself.

Saturday, August 22 | 1:30–3:30pm | $30

Come explore what it might mean to bring a little more ease into the way you rest.

WHAT WANTS TO GROW?
A new retreat experience in St. Croix • February 6–13, 2027

Something is already growing in you. Maybe you can name it. Maybe you can’t quite yet.

What Wants to Grow? is an invitation to step away from the demands and momentum of everyday life and spend a week listening more closely to your body, your own voice, and what may be ready to emerge.

Together, we’ll begin our days with meditation and reflection, explore practices centered on voice, communication, and self-awareness, and return to the body through slow flow, yin, and restorative yoga. There will be meaningful conversation and deep listening, but also plenty of spaciousness: afternoons by the sea, hammocks, books, swimming, wandering, resting, and simply doing nothing at all.

And all of it unfolds at beautiful Feather Leaf Inn, where the rainforest meets the Caribbean Sea and life naturally seems to move at a different pace. 🌿🌊. We've been hosting retreats there now for many years and our guests continue to come back to the serenity and pristine beauty of this seaside inn.

Guided by Amy Dillard, Lisa-Marie Napoli & Matece Skow, this week brings together decades of experience in yoga, communication, conflict management, education, relationship-building, and the practice of creating spaces where people can listen more deeply to themselves and to one another.

Every part of the retreat is an invitation, never an obligation. Come as you are.

Perhaps it’s time to discover what wants to grow.

Maybe teacher training has been somewhere in the back of your mind.

Maybe you know you want to teach someday. Maybe you simply want to understand the practice you've come to love on a much deeper level. Or maybe you're curious, but not quite sure what saying yes would actually mean.

That's exactly what our September 4th Info Session is for.

Come meet us, learn how the 200-Hour program unfolds, hear what we'll study together, ask your questions, and get a feel for whether this might be the right time for you.

And if it is, there's a pretty significant reason to decide this month: our Super Earlybird tuition ends September 15th, saving you $800 off full tuition.

No pressure to know before you walk through the door. Come learn about the program first, then listen for your yes.

We are all students first.

This past weekend, our 300-Hour Advanced Teacher Training cohort gathered for a deep dive into Yin Yoga. As always with this group, the questions and discussions were quite nuanced and thoughtful, as each teacher found their own relationship and meaning with the Yin practice.

This is what happens as we move deeper into the embodiment of all that yoga is. At first, we learn what to do. Then we begin to understand why we do it. And eventually, we learn to trust ourselves enough to discern how to share it with others.

The journey from 200-hour training into advanced study isn’t simply about accumulating more information. It’s about developing greater discernment, more confidence, more curiosity. We get cozy with unlearning and develop a stronger personal practice that can ride the waves of change.

Watching this group continue to question, experiment, practice, teach, and grow in leadership reminds me why I believe so deeply in yoga education.

And as we prepare to welcome a new group into our 2027 200-Hour Teacher Training, I look back and see that none of these teachers started here… They started by being curious enough to take the next step.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to take yours, our next 200-Hour Teacher Training Info Session is September 4th. Come learn about the program, ask your questions, and see where this path might lead you.
