In over 20 years as a therapist helping moms repair and strengthen their relationships with their out of the box kids, here’s what I know works best.
To have a close relationship with your child here are the top FOUR traits you want to cultivate:
1. Emotional availability. This ranks as most important because without it there’s no potential for real connection. Great relationships are a two way street, but you have yo go first. The more present you are when you connect with your kiddo, and I mean really present, the more bricks you lay in the foundation of your solid relationship.
2. Emotional safety. If you want to know who your child is and be their first call when they get stuck at someone’s house at 15yrs old where shady stuff is going down, they need to feel completely trusting that you won’t freak out, judge or lecture them, or criticize their choices. Learn to be the safest person they know.
3. Genuine curiosity. This one is hard for some people. Start small by practicing thoughts like “I wonder what this experience is like for you?” And remember to throw out your own assumptions about what your kid is thinking or feeling, or what motivates their choices. It’s amazing how often we get it wrong.
4. Acceptance of who they are. Their essence, their temperament, and their needs. This is a process, but when we come with the first three traits above, acceptance is a natural next step. Kids have an amazing ability to know if you’re telling the truth. So no faking it.
💚 Kids want to know they’re worthy of our attention and presence.
💚 They want to feel safe enough to relax around us without fear or guilt.
💚 They want us to be interested in who they are becoming, not so we can control it, but just because we gain satisfaction from knowing them.
💚 They crave acceptance. We don’t have to accept all of their behaviors or choices, or even understand why they feel what they feel. We just have to accept who they are, and believe that is enough. They will figure the rest out in time.
Which trait is your easiest and which your hardest?
