I’m a mental health provider… but that doesn’t mean mental health hasn’t affected our family, too.
September is Su***de Prevention Month.
My husband wrote this song about his own battle with mental health—his pain, his fight, and his journey through it.
And today, WE stay. ❤️🙏🏻
We stay together.
We stay mentally and physically strong.
We keep choosing healing, growth, and each other.
I am beyond proud of you—and proud of us—for everything we have faced, fought through, healed from, and overcome.
Your story matters.
Your life matters.
Stay. ❤️
By David Dean:
Before you listen, there’s one thing I want you to understand about why TODAY I STAY has two voices.
This song is about depression, the lies your own mind can convince you are true, and the ripple effect those struggles can have on the people who love you.
One person says, “I’m fine” because they’re hiding how badly they’re hurting. The other may say the exact same thing because they’re trying to stay strong for the person they love. Either voice could be either person. Sometimes one is drowning while the other is trying to keep them above water, without realizing they’re both going under.
I learned that personally. When I was struggling and believed leaving was the answer, I couldn’t see what it was doing to my wife. Later, when I began finding my way back and finally shared with her what I had been going through, she shared something with me that I hadn’t understood: she had been hurting too. She had been drowning quietly beside me while trying to be strong for me.
That realization stayed with me, and it’s a big part of why I wrote this song.
So this one is for my wife. Thank you for being there, even during the time I didn’t realize how much it was costing you. I love you.
That’s the ripple effect. That’s “We
were drowning quietly.”
Listen to the words with that in mind.
