WHAT DOES SAFETY MEAN?

Before we can understand attachment, we have to understand what “safety” means. Attachment develops around how safety was experienced, offered, lost, or repaired in early relationships.

Safety is not only physical protection. In attachment terms, safety often includes:

* Emotional safety — feeling accepted, soothed, and emotionally held

* Relational safety — knowing connection won’t suddenly disappear

* Psychological safety — being able to express needs, feelings, or mistakes without shame or rejection

* Nervous system safety — having interactions that calm rather than overwhelm the body

* Consistency — experiencing caregivers or partners as predictable and responsive

People can experience the same situation very differently. It depends on what their nervous system learned early in life.
For one person, closeness = safety
For another, closeness = lack of safety, overwhelm, or risk

Attachment questions to ask yourself :

* “What feels like safety to me?"
* “What do I notice in my body when feeling safe enough?"
* “What feeling words accompany those body sensations?
* “What does my behavior look like when safe?"

? Ask the same about lack of real/perceived lack of safety.
