The Best Gift Can Be Just Doing the Research

When someone you love is newly diagnosed, it's hard to know what to do besides show up. One concrete way to help: take the research off their plate.

Gather the diagnosis details, run a trial search, and bring back a few options in plain language. That way, their next appointment is a conversation, not a web of new info.

TriCan was built to make that easier for caregivers AND patients.

What If My Doctor Doesn't Bring It Up?

Here's something worth knowing: your oncologist may only be familiar with trials happening at their own hospital or network, while there are hundreds of trials ongoing nationwide.

That doesn't mean they don't support the idea of you joining a clinical trial. It just means the conversation may have to start with you.

Try: “I've been researching trial options — can we talk through a few I found?” Most doctors welcome an informed, engaged patient.

Am I Even Eligible for a Trial?

Short answer: it depends. That's exactly what TriCan Health (and your doctor) can help you figure out.

Eligibility is usually based on things like: cancer stage and type, specific genetic or biomarker results, prior treatments you've had, and your overall health. These are called “inclusion” and “exclusion” criteria, and they exist to protect participants and keep results meaningful.

The only way to know for sure is to check! Most people are surprised by what actually qualifies.

Hope Is Not the Same as Naivety

Hoping for more time, more options, or a better outcome isn't naive. It's what keeps people moving forward through impossible weeks.

Clinical trials exist because researchers, doctors, and patients before you refused to accept that current treatments were the end of their story. Every approved pancreatic cancer treatment today started as a trial someone was brave enough to join.

Whatever stage you're at, it's okay to keep asking, “what else is out there?”

A Checklist for Your Next Appointment

Bringing this list can turn a brief 15-minute appointment into a valuable learning opportunity:

✓ “Is there a clinical trial that matches my specific diagnosis and biomarkers?”
✓ “What would participating mean for my current treatment plan?”
✓ “Who do I contact if I want a second opinion on trial options?”
✓ “What's the timeline if I want to enroll?”

Print it, screenshot it, or save this post — whatever will help you remember to bring it!

Myth: I Might Get a Placebo Instead of Treatment

This is one of the most common fears about trials, but it's not how cancer trials work.

Withholding treatment isn't considered ethical when effective options exist, so most pancreatic cancer trials either test the new therapy exclusively, or compare that new treatment against the current standard of care. While some trials do include placebos, participants typically still receive active treatment (like chemotherapy) that they'd receive if they weren't in a trial.

Trial design varies, so this is always worth asking about directly — but you *will* receive treatment in a pancreatic cancer clinical trial.

For the Person Doing the Research at 11 PM

If you're the spouse, sibling, or friend up late reading about treatment options for someone you love — we see you.

You don't need a medical degree to help. Start with three things: their diagnosis details (type and stage), any prior treatments, and their general location. That's often enough to begin a trial search on their behalf.

TriCan lets you search for a loved one and share what you find, in language that's easy to bring to their next appointment.

Will Insurance Cover a Clinical Trial?

It's one of the first questions patients ask — and a fair one. In the U.S., most health insurance plans (including Medicare) are required to cover routine patient-care costs during a clinical trial, while the trial sponsor typically covers the experimental treatment itself.

Every plan and trial is different, so this is a conversation for your care team and the trial's research coordinator — but cost alone shouldn't rule trials out before you ask.

Clinical Trial Phases, Explained Simply

Phase 1: Is it safe, and what's the right dose?
Phase 2: Does it work, and for whom?
Phase 3: Is it better than the current standard treatment?
Phase 4: How does it perform in the real world, after approval?

Most pancreatic cancer patients join Phase 2 trials. This means the treatment has already cleared initial safety testing. Understanding the trial phases can help you and your doctor weigh your options and make an informed choice.
