As OB nurses and doulas, the number one question we get asked is …
“Is this normal?”
Is it normal for babies to feed nonstop?
Is it normal to spontaneously burst into tears postpartum?
Is it normal for pumping to barely produce anything at first?
Is it normal that my recovery feels like it is taking longer than I expected?
Is it normal that my newborn sounds like a tiny goat at 2am?
Yes! And here’s what we want more parents to hear:
So many parts of postpartum and newborn life feel surprising because nobody fully prepares you for how physically, emotionally, and mentally intense this season can be.
Asking questions doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you care.
Partners, this applies to you too.
One of the best things you can do during postpartum is help create a judgment-free space where questions are welcomed instead of minimized.
Sometimes support looks like:
Refilling the water bottle
Taking the baby so mom can shower
Reminding each other that you’re both learning in real time
Or even googling less and asking for help sooner
You were never supposed to know everything automatically.
Parenting is learned, not instinctively perfected overnight. 💛
