How many medications are you taking that you’re not even sure you still need?
That’s one of the questions Dr. Mia and I got into during this conversation, because medication lists have a way of growing and growing, especially as we get older.
And here’s the thing I want families to remember: if you don’t know why you’re taking a medication, whether it’s actually helping, or whether the risks are now outweighing the benefits, it’s worth asking the question.
Dr. Mia points out that something like a medication for bladder incontinence may not be doing much at all if you’re still having the same symptoms. So why keep taking it?
This is exactly where a geriatrician can be incredibly helpful. They can look at the whole picture, not just one condition or one medication, and help you figure out what still makes sense.
If you’re caring for an older parent or loved one, take this as your reminder to review that medication list. And don’t be afraid to ask, “Do we still need this?”
