A mom told us recently that she agreed to a specialist referral she wasn't sure about, simply because the appointment felt like it was wrapping up and she didn't want to hold things up.
She spent the next two weeks second-guessing it.
Here's what we want every parent to know: you are allowed to pause. You are allowed to think. You are allowed to leave a visit without a decision made.
Some phrases that are completely okay to say out loud at any doctor's office:
- "Can I have a day to think about this before we schedule anything?"
- "I'd like to read more before we move forward."
- "Can we revisit this at our next visit if nothing changes?"
- "I want to talk to my partner before deciding on medication."
- "Can you send me something to read so I can ask better questions?"
A good pediatrician will welcome every one of these. A rushed system makes them feel impossible.
That's part of why we built Fig Tree the way we did. Our visits are long and unhurried, our messages get answered the same day, and "let me think about it" is always a complete sentence here. You don't have to decide in the last two minutes of an appointment, because the appointment isn't ending in two minutes.
You know your child best. We'll give you the time and information to act on it. 🌿
