Most people think breastfeeding protections are federal law and stop there. They're not the whole story.

Some tribal nations in the Great Lakes region, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, have written breastfeeding protections into law that go further than what U.S. federal law requires: paid breaks, longer coverage, the right to actually nurse on-site instead of just pump, and codified rights to breastfeed on tribal land.

This isn't a footnote. It's tribal sovereignty in action, nations using their own lawmaking power to protect something U.S. law treats as a minimum, not a floor to build past.

The Lindsay Clancy case has every IBCLC and postpartum professional talking about her care. Almost no one is talking about ours, specifically, whether we're screening for partner engagement at all.

We're often the only clinicians who get a raw, real look inside a newly postpartum family's life. We see who shows up for feeds and who doesn't. Who asks "how are you?" and who only asks about ounces and weight gain.

I wrote a full blog post on this, including a free one-page checklist with 7 practical ways to start screening for it: questions to add to intake, a script for checking in on partners directly, and how to build your referral pathway before you need it.

We live in a world that loves quick fixes.

Baby not gaining weight?
Fortify the bottles.

Reflux?
Thicken the feeds.

Bottle refusal?
Buy another bottle.

Sometimes those interventions are absolutely appropriate. But before we change a feeding plan, I think it's just as important to ask why the feeding changed in the first place.

What is the baby trying to tell us?
What changed?
What are we missing?

The goal isn't to avoid interventions when they're needed. It's to make sure we're treating the underlying problem, not just the symptom.

Because when we understand the "why," we can make more informed decisions about the "what."

💚 The best feeding plans start with asking the right questions.

👇 Have you ever been given a feeding recommendation without anyone explaining the reasoning behind it?

Starting solids can feel like one more parenting decision everyone expects you to get exactly right.

Purées or baby-led weaning?
When should you introduce allergens?
What is normal gagging, and what is choking?
How much should your baby eat?
Do milk feeds change immediately?

This live virtual workshop is designed to help you sort through the noise and build a safe, realistic plan that works for your baby and your family.

You can attend from anywhere, with your baby, in your pajamas.

A limited number of insurance-covered spots are available for eligible families, along with a small number of community access spots for families whose insurance cannot be billed.

Space is intentionally limited so there is time for questions and individualized discussion.

Sometimes the plan is not to pump more, supplement “just in case,” or constantly measure every ounce.

Sometimes the work is learning how to recognize when breastfeeding is going well and trusting the information your baby and your body are giving you.

For this mom, one of her biggest goals was to exclusively nurse while she was home with her baby before returning to work. But when you cannot see ounces going into a baby, it can be incredibly hard to believe that what you are doing is enough.

That confidence did not come from someone simply saying, “Trust your body.” It came from knowing what signs to look for and understanding when there actually was, or was not, a reason to intervene.

Because good breastfeeding support is not always about giving a parent more to do.

Sometimes it is helping them realize they can put the pump down, stop chasing reassurance, feed their baby, and enjoy the season they worked so hard for. 💛

This World Breastfeeding Week, we are celebrating informed confidence, individualized care, and feeding support that helps families meet their own goals.

There’s a big difference between knowing about breastfeeding and actually feeding the baby in front of you.

You can take the class, read the books, know what a good latch “should” look like, and still find yourself wondering why the pieces aren’t coming together the way you expected.

Because feeding isn’t one size fits all. Milk supply, anatomy, oral function, birth, recovery, baby’s temperament, your goals, your mental health, and about a hundred other little things can all change the picture.

That’s why good clinical lactation support isn’t just giving someone more information. It’s helping a family figure out what their baby and their body need.

You were never supposed to know how to troubleshoot all of this on your own. 🤍

There is something powerful about how different breastfeeding can look from one baby to the next.

With her first baby, feeding started with a 10 week NICU stay and a journey that was primarily pumping. With her second, baby latched right after birth, but that did not mean everything was automatically easy.

One of the hardest parts was learning to trust that her body was doing what it needed to do.

And sometimes confidence comes from encouragement. Sometimes it also comes from having objective information to back it up.

Weighted feeds gave her real numbers. Ongoing support gave her a place to ask questions, work through the hard days, and make decisions based on what was actually happening instead of fear.

That is such an important part of lactation care.

Not just saying, “Trust your body.”

Helping families understand what their body and baby are telling them, and giving them the information they need to feel confident in that trust.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we are celebrating every version of the journey, including the ones that look completely different from baby to baby. 💛

You asked one simple feeding question...

An IBCLC heard about 15 more.

Not because we're trying to make things complicated, but because every answer changes the next question.

Before recommending a bottle, a ni**le flow, a supplement, a fl**ge size, or a feeding plan, we want to understand the whole picture.

The goal isn't to find the fastest answer.
It's to find the right answer.

Because every baby and every family deserves individualized care. 💚

What feeding question have you been told has a "simple" answer?

08/07/2026

Sometimes the hardest part is not finding more information. It is finding someone who will truly listen, make sense of what is happening, and help you know where to begin.

Feeding challenges can feel overwhelming when every concern seems connected and you are receiving conflicting advice from every direction. A thoughtful starting point can turn that uncertainty into a clear, manageable plan.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we are celebrating the families who asked questions, trusted their instincts, and found support that looked beyond a one-size-fits-all answer.

Because being heard matters. Knowing where to start matters. And the right support can change the entire feeding experience. 💛
