Spinal Cord Strong: Cameran's C6-C7 SCI Journey

Spinal Cord Strong: Cameran's C6-C7 SCI Journey Cameran, now 20, sustained a SCI while in a vehicle accident on April 25th, 2024, just five days after turning 18.

If our journey helps just one person, documenting our journey is well worth it! Inspiration, with the best medicine being laughter! 💚

This is one of those posts..... the reality of living with a SCI...

Back on June 3rd at 3AM, Cameran yelled out for me hysterically. I do not think I moved as fast as I did since his accident. When I got to him, he was panicking that something was not right and I proceeded to check his BP.... 219/110, I legit thoughthe was having a heart attack! We were transported to Spotsylvania Memorial and he was discharged on having as severe Anxiety attack and we come home.

Within the next week, we got him with his P*P and treatment started for anxiety. Over the next few weeks Cameran was hypervigilant of his breathing because of said panic attack and would tell me he didnt feel like he was breathing right. In return, I reassured him everything was alright, it was just the feeling of anxiety.

June 13th rolls around. Cameran wakes up and half of his good hand was numb. That is definitely a neurological issue so we left for VCU. The closer we got to Ladysmith the numb feeling started progressing accross his hand, so we stopped at Ladysmith Rescue and they get us to VCU. He was discharged with having a form of Neuropathy because of his SCI and sleepingon arm wrong. It took nearly 2 days for him to regain normal feeling back in his hand.

While returning home on I95 from VCU, Cameran goes into anxiety attack as we are approaching Ladysmith. We stop at Wawa, get him a drink, and he tells us that there is no way he can continue to travel in the car while riding in the wheelchair. As any parent would, on June 23rd we purchased a Kia Carnival. He is now able to ride passenger and his wheelchair rolls right up into the back.

Fast forward to the evening of June 27th. Something was not right, BP was running dangerously high again, we were transported to Spotsylvania Memorial, and this is when things get interesting.... Blood work comes back fine and the doctor orders x-rays. X-rays come back that he has A LOT of trapped air, everything else looks fine, and the ER doctor wants to discharge him home due to nothing else that can be done. Cameran could not even sit up he had so much trapped air and at this point had been burping non-stop for nearly 6 hours.

I nicely told her something was not right, I was not bringing him home like that, and she needed to figure out what was wrong. A bit goes by and she returns telling us she has ordered a CT w/ contrast. Cameran was steadily burping, the results come back, she reports that all organs are working normally and they he was just full of trapped air... By this time we had been up for 24 hours and I was done with the BS. I inform her that the situation he was in could send him into AD, in which she responded with, What is that? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!

Needless to say, after going back and forth for about 12 hours, he was admitted to the hospital from the ER. We had not been in the room for an hour before the doctor came in and informed us that Cameran had a UTI and developed a Ileus! I then informed them that the ER doctor had tried discharged him not once, but twice on the diagnosis he was full of air. He was discharged 3 days later.

Nearly 24 hours of non-stop burping and nearly 36 hours of absolutely no sleep, things started looking up.

My question.... While anxiety definitely played a role back on June 3rd and given he didn't think he was breathing right, did we come home with him not being fully diagnosed by Spotsylvania Memorial Hospital? On June 3rd, is that when his UTI was just starting out and it just progressed up until June 27th when his nervous system couldn't take it any more?

I guess we will never know, but an ER doctor should be required to have a general knowledge of the full human body. At no time should a patient in need show up to the ER and the doctor asks, what is that?

June was definitely a month for the books but it did nothing but make Cameran stronger as he was baptized on July 15th! ✝️

Watching Cameran face life after his accident has shown me what true strength looks like. Watching Gavin remind him he's still just his big brother has reminded me that laughter is sometimes the best medicine. Gavin is always up to something.... and the was a day after! 😂

Today we celebrate Cameran's baptism and the journey that brought him here. Two years after his accident, we are reminded of God's faithfulness, grace, and the strength He provides. We couldn't be more proud of the young man he is becoming and are so thankful to celebrate this special day with him 💙🙏

We have totally been in incognito over the past few weeks as life tossed us a curveball, and now that we are posting our van for sale, many I am sure is wondering what the what...

As many of you know, Cameran was signed up and we were about to hit the road on June 28th. We were heading to Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center for 4 weeks for him to do their driving program.

Long story short, the closer we were getting to leaving, the more Cameran was battling himself about going. This led to him going into a full blown out panic attack at 3:15AM, on June 3rd.

The panic attack led way for continued anxiety and PTSD, which we have have been working on getting straight since June 3rd. This anxiety and PTSD has affected the way Cameran feels about being in a vehicle, particularly a vehicle where he was simply sitting in his wheelchair.

So, if you will please shares this out and about. She has so much more life left and she needs a good home. 💚

This van has been a solid vehicle for our family since when our son got hurt in 2024 and obtained a spinal cord injury. We are truly sad to see it go as it is the first vehicle that has helped us transport him around. However, we have upgraded and the time has come to send it to a new home to help someone else in need. ❤️

Last night we ventured to Richmond and Cameran was able to see Ryan Bingham in concert.... and I will admit, I did not know not one song! 🤣

Cameran also got a copy of their Set List! 🎶

There was also a very sweet compassionate couple that stood behind us, I did not get their names and they were gone before I realized they were leaving. I shared this page with them and if you see this post, thank you so, SO much for your kindness last night! 💗

Yesterday was not only an adventure for Cameran, but turned into an adventure for our party of 9! With a long childhood friend of Cameran, we all traveled to Washington DC Zoo. With my poor planning, I failed to order parking passes in time before they sold out.... so we decided to take the Metro out of Springfield.

We get on the Blue line and headed to Grand Station to transfer onto the Red line.... we thought! When we reached the Pentagon City stop we were told to get off and a free trolly would bus us around Crystal City where there was work being completed. We would be taken to Chinatown to board onto the yellow line, then to the red line, putting us at the zoo. This took much time of us being at the zoo with many elevator rides, having to hop several trains, and a bus ride.

Leaving we had to do everything in reverse. Except there was a problem when we got back to Chinatown.... the elevator was out of service!!!! LIKE HOW!?!!?

The 7 of us had made it up the escalator as Tim and Cameran headed to the elevator. I got a call from Tim that the elevator was out of service. When he asked the attendant, he was told they would have to get back on the yellow line, to go back in order to get on the other side where there was a working elevator! I find this being a huge issue! They better be glad Tim was with Cameran and not myself because they would have gotten an earful!

Us being a party of 9, we were not about to head backwards, we did it the Pickett way! Two of the guys headed back to Tim and Cameran while I remained with the party. If you know anything about the Metro, y'all know the crazies come out at night!

The guys picked Cameran up in the wheelchair and headed up the escalator! I so wish I could have got a photo of that!

We made it back to Fredericksburg in time for dinner....
