I’ve been on both sides of healthcare for many years now: first it was western medical education and clinical practice, and now functional medicine training and health consulting. Both are vitally important!

With western medicine we have things like surgery and anesthesia, antibiotics to prevent infections, lifesaving heart interventions, orthopedic care of traumatic injuries, improved infant survival rates, advanced cancer treatments, and much more. If you have a serious, acute issue, then Western medicine can’t be beat.

On the other hand, although we are living longer lives than any generation before us, the incidence of largely preventable chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers, some cancers, stroke, and others continue to make our day to day lives less healthy than in past generations.

The beauty of functional medicine, integrative medicine, wholistic medicine, or whatever you choose to call it is its simplicity. We focus on the modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and targeted supplementation that can alter the course, reverse, or prevent many chronic disease processes. It’s the nuance of “healthspan,” or having good health to go along with your increased lifespan.

If you want to learn more, please leave a comment or DM me for info. Targeted, individualized, precision preventive care is the future!

In case you needed another reason to get outside!

Researchers analyzed patient data from 10 countries. The team found a correlation between low vitamin D levels and hyperactive immune systems. Vitamin D strengthens innate immunity and prevents overactive immune responses. The finding could explain several mysteries, including why children are unlik...

This is interesting! We all probably already know that as we age, in order to maintain a healthy weight we need to eat fewer calories and exercise more. But the reason behind this is that the fat cells in our bodies don’t turn over (die and regenerate) as quickly as other cell types as we age. This is another great reason for intermittent fasting, which helps your body to preferentially burn stored body fat for exercise, an effect which is significantly increased when you exercise in a fasted state!

Many people struggle to keep their weight in check as they get older. Now new research has uncovered why that is: lipid turnover in the fat tissue decreases during aging and makes it easier to gain weight, even if we don't eat more or exercise less than before.
