I am compelled to write this partly because of Gordon's permission by example to feel out loud for the people we meet through books or online interactions. His last podcast episode, a requiem for chaos magician Peter J. Carroll, addresses the impact Carroll's work had on his life, though he caveats that he did not know him as a friend. They met a few times and corresponded a little bit. "How rare is it," he asks the viewer, "to overlap your incarnation with one of your philosophical heroes?" How rare indeed.

It is because of the brave and caring way that Gordon White acknowledged others who meant something to him that I think he wanted to be written about. And as I have been reminded by his passing of what is mine to do: writing is part of the work I am here for.

Steven Forrest called me a “lun-ah-tic” in his natal reading of my chart because I’m so lunar (Cancer rising with a heavily aspected Virgo moon on the IC).

In traditional astrology, planets of the natal chart that occupy the sign opposite the sign of their rulership are said to be in detriment:

Venus in Aries/Scorpio, moon in Capricorn, sun in Aquarius, Mercury in Sag/Pisces, Mars in Ta**us/Libra.

The planet in detriment is said to operate with less strength.

But what I’ve found from reading charts for over 10 years is that the planet in detriment often becomes a focus for that person.

Its discomfort is a catalyst for understanding the themes of that planetary energy, and ultimately for growth.

Like the Venus in Aries woman who makes beauty a nonnegotiable value and prioritizes self-love, or the moon in Capricorn who takes care of others with heroic compassion.

There are so many influences in a chart that play together to make each person unique, and so many ways to express the potential. When you encounter a challenge in your natal chart, the extra work you have to put in can lead to expressing that potential even more fully. The “weak” placement becomes a secret strength.
