Happy Day of Encouragement!

Have you ever found that it's a lot easier to encourage others than to encourage yourself? It's a pretty common phenomenon. The reason behind this is that you see everything behind the scenes for yourself - the indecision, the fear, the previous failures. For others, you mostly just see the end results without the mess they made getting there.

Today's the day to get out there and tell someone they're doing great. And if they're not doing great right now, they'll get there soon. Outside perspectives help ground us so it's not just your internal dialogue you're hearing every day.

Today is Su***de Prevention Day.

We all go through hard times in our lives. Some go through times so hard they'd rather die than keep going. Over 2 million people attempt su***de each year. Most of the time it isn't a spur of the moment decision, so there's an opportunity to help someone get adequate support.

A major issue in su***de prevention is the stigma around discussing it directly. People with suicidal thoughts are afraid to say they want to die for fear of social backlash. Concerned friends and family won't ask directly for fear of offending who they're asking.

Many people who commit su***de have little to no social support network, with the most successful method being fi****ms. They have no one to talk to and have an easy access su***de method. If someone you know is suicidal, they should not have access to any firearm.

If you are worried someone is considering committing su***de, ask about it directly. Not "How are you holding up?", say "Are you thinking about killing yourself?" If someone you know is suicidal, make sure they know you're there to support them, day or night, work or weekend and help them to get help from mental health professionals. Check in daily. Su***de is not beaten alone, but together.

This week is Child Protection Week, and it's all about raising awareness of child abuse and neglect in order to prevent and stop it from happening.

Neglect is what happens when someone's basic needs aren't being met. There are four main types:

Physical: Not providing adequate food, hygiene, shelter, clothing, and safety
Emotional: This involves not being nurtured and stimulated properly, such as by ignoring, isolating, humiliating, or intimidating them . This can also look like having your emotions be frequently invalidated.
Medical: Not providing appropriate medical/dental care or tending to physical health in a mindful way
Educational: Providing inadequate education or education that is not well rounded so that someone could understand outside information if presented it

Abuse comes in many shapes and sizes, and can come from within or outside the household. Here are a few types and what they can look like:

Physical: causing intentional physical harm
Emotional: insults and demeaning comments
Sexual: being forced or persuaded into sexual activities or with sexual comments made about your without your consent

Childhood abuse and neglect have negative effects that follow people for the rest of their lives, often requiring long-term professional treatment. If you or someone you know is currently experiencing neglect or abuse, contact the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453 or simply call 911 to get help.

Today is Neither Rain Nor Snow Day. It's originally about the US Post Office and their relentless effort and reliability in doing their job, but we're going to take it a step more personal.

Who in your life is dependable like that? If you called at 2 AM, who would pick up the phone? If you had scheduled time with them and a thunderstorm came down, who would still show?

Truly reliable friends and family are rare. Treasure them, and let them know how much you treasure them today.

Happy Pet Rock Day!

Pet rocks are a bit funky, aren't they? They just with there with those big googly eyes. And some people go nuts for them, collecting pet rocks of dozens of shapes and sizes.

Even if it's a little weird, it's all good fun. There's a quirky hobby out there for everyone. There's competitive Tetris, spicy pepper gardening, old soda collecting, you name it.

Don't be afraid to get weird having fun. Your life is your own and it's absolutely okay to have "weird hobbies" that are just yours.

Starting counseling is the biggest (and scariest) step in the healing process. There's logistics to work through like when to meet, your budget, how far you're willing to go, etc. But the biggest hurdle is finding a counselor that's a good fit for you.

There are many different styles to therapy, and that's not limited to just clinical approach. Some counselors offer a shoulder to cry on, others are more reserved. Some actively push and challenge you to grow, while others work subtly.

This week's blog is about how to pick a counselor that's right for you. Come check it out!

Happy Live Fearless Day!

Fear is natural and can be a healthy thing. Fear urges us to be safe, and aware of our surroundings. Fear stops you from taking what you perceive to be a "dangerous" risk, like jumping down the stairs. What it does not do is practically anything new or exciting.

Fear resists personal growth, so sometimes that fear needs to be challenged. Obeying fear doesn't get anyone a better job or help you land a date.

Today is the day for courage. Push your comfort zone, try something new, and grow.

This month is National Recovery Month, a time to raise awareness for substance abuse recovery.

A lot of addictive substances are normalized in society, like caffeine, ni****ne, and alcohol. Many prescribed painkillers are addictive, and many people don't really get a choice using those. All recreational drugs are addictive to some greater or lesser degree. While relatively healthy moderation is doable for many drugs, here are a few signs that it's become an addiction:

1. Cravings: it's not just a treat, you need it to feel normal again
2. Withdrawal: if you go without it for too long, you get irritable and feel physically ill
3. Prioritization: you start neglecting work and self care while sinking all your money into buying more

As with any medical condition, once you realize there's a problem you should see a medical professional. For most cases, that means talking to a counselor or physician that specializes in substance abuse.

Recovery from substance abuse is a long and difficult process, but it's much easier with the support of professionals and people who care about you.

A lot of life is uncertain. Work, housing, politics, etc. One of the few and greatest things we have to rely on is each other. Having someone in your corner is like having an anchor in a storm.

Being in someone's corner doesn't mean having all the answers. It's not great advice or practical knowledge that helps the most, it's just simply being there through thick and thin.

This week's blog is about showing support to someone you care about. Being supportive isn't always particularly helpful in a practical way. Sometimes it isn't comfortable, either. Come take a look.
