Protein.
Everyone talks about the importance of protein in muscle health and growth for workouts and exercise.
But what about everyday life and maintenance?
As a therapist, muscle fatigue, damage and loss are often the bulk of what I see in my clients on a daily basis, both young and aging. Very rarely, however, does diet and protein intake get mentions as a culprit.
Proteins aid in fighting against anabolic resistance, which leads to decreased efficiency in using amino acids to build and repair muscle. By the age of 30, we begin to lose muscle mass, with further acceleration at 60. Decreases in mass has been directly correlated to increased fall risk, a common occurrence in the aging community that ca often lead to hospitalizations and death.
Daily recommended intake ranges between 60-100 grams per day throughout meal consumption. How many of us can say we are achieving that daily? Even more of a question for those who follow vegetarian of vegan practices, who are less able to meet daily intake requirements for simple maintenance levels though food alone.
Supplementation is often the best and sometimes only choice to ensure meeting daily requirements. With both traditional and vegan options of protein sources we no longer have to sacrifice intake or eat strictly meats to gain what we need for daily maintenance and healthy lifestyle. The simplicity and quality of the Whey and other sources of XS products allows me personally the ease of access without the weigh down of extra food or time used to track down protein sources, and doesn’t skimp on other necessary vitamins and nutrients either.
