When life feels difficult, many of us respond with self-criticism instead of kindness towards ourselves.

This 5-Minute Mindful Self-Compassion Break, adapted from the Mindful Self-Compassion curriculum, offers a simple practice to help you pause, acknowledge what you're experiencing, and respond with greater care and understanding.

In just five minutes, you'll be guided to:
✨ Notice what's happening
✨ Remember you're not alone
✨ Offer yourself kindness

A small pause can make a meaningful difference.

If this practice resonates with you, download the free Insight Timer meditation app and follow me for future mindfulness and self-compassion meditations.

Warm wishes for your health and wellbeing,

Brenda

A thought appearing in the mind does not define who we are.

Mindfulness teaches us to pause long enough to ask, “Does this thought align with the person I want to be?”

We cannot always control what thoughts arise, but we can choose what we nurture, believe, and act upon.

Healing and wholeness come not from pretending we are only light or positive, but from honestly recognizing our fears, wounds, anger, insecurities, and unconscious patterns with awareness and compassion.

The more we know ourselves, the more capacity we have for empathy, humility, and authentic connection.

What helps you stay compassionate with yourself during difficult emotions?

What leaves you feeling more grounded and alive, and what leaves you feeling drained or disconnected?

Your system doesn’t only respond to “big stressors.” It also responds to ongoing misalignment, depletion, and lack of restoration even when everything looks “fine” on the outside.

Overcommitting, people-pleasing, constant digital noise, emotional labor, lack of rest, or relationships that feel one-sided can quietly drain energy.

In contrast, rest, nature, meaningful connection, movement, and quiet moments can feel deeply nourishing.

Noticing this is often the first step toward meaningful change.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Today is a invitation to pause and connect with the world around us through our senses, feeling the soft spring air, listening to birdsong, noticing fresh blossoms, and breathing in the scent of the earth.

May this day bring gratitude, presence, and joy.

We sometimes move through life with quiet beliefs about ourselves, what we’re capable of, what we’re “good at,” and what may never change. In a sense, we are creating our destiny.

This is where mindset comes in.

A fixed mindset might sound like:
“I’m not good at this.”
“This is just how I am.”

A growth mindset gently opens the door:
“I’m still learning.”
“This can develop with time and practice.”

From a mindfulness perspective, the invitation isn’t to judge these thoughts, but to notice them.

From my own experience, the thoughts don't completely go away with a mindfulness practice, however when we notice them, we can shift the narrative. To become aware of the moments when the mind closes and gently introduce the possibility that something new could emerge.

It may be helpful to think of ourselves as plants, creating the conditions for growth. It begins with awareness, curiosity, and compassion toward ourselves.

This is where a mindfulness practice comes in.

Reactivity happens fast. A tone of voice, a barking dog, a critical comment and suddenly the nervous system is activated. The mind is spinning, and we’re no longer choosing our response.

This is the nervous system doing its job to protect us. Sometimes our reactions are based on past experiences and memories.

With a consistent practice, we begin to notice the moment before the reaction fully takes over, perhaps it's a tightening in the chest, a rush of heat, a story forming in the mind.

In that small but powerful space, something new becomes possible, a pause and a different choice. This is where freedom lives, not in never reacting, but in no longer being owned by our reactions.

Over time, mindfulness helps the brain and body feel safer, softening the intensity of these automatic responses and allowing us to meet ourselves, and others, with greater steadiness and care.

When I started noticing subtle changes in how I responded, I was motivated to continue practicing mindfulness. What have you noticed?
