✨If I was your postpartum doula✨

It’s been a minutes since I’ve made one of these post, but I figured now is a great time to add to this series since I’ve been working with a lot more postpartum families!

The topic of food has been coming up a lot more with my clients, specifically what the heck do I eat in between meals?! I know that breastfeeding hunger is REAL!
Did you know that you can burn an extra 500-700 calories a day just by breastfeeding? Crazy, right?! So please, have all the snacks you’re craving!

During today’s postpartum session I whipped up this quick and simple snack. Pictured above is an energy bite (recipe dropping soon!) with a Granny Smith apple and a side of nut butter. The great thing about this snack is you probably already have these things in your kitchen and it takes less than 5 minutes to prep.
The apple will give your body some sugar for an energy boost and the nut butter is a great source of protein (we love healthy fats over here!)

What are some of your favorite postpartum snacks?! Comment them below!👇

Placenta “Circular Cake’ in Latin
Considered the “external soul” in Old Testament. Family tree. Produces hormones - (hCG), progesterone, estrogen, & human placental lactogen (hPL). In Bali the placenta is called the “Ari Ari” deriving from the word, younger sibling, & is considered the physical body of the baby’s guardian angel. It’s a barrier between fetal & maternal circulations.
_
LOTUS BIRTH is the practice of leaving the umbilical cord uncut after childbirth so that the baby is left attached to the placenta until the cord naturally separates at the navel. The cord naturally separates at the umbilicus generally occurs within 3–10 days after birth. To prepare the placenta: place it in a bed of sea salt that you change daily, cover it generously with with more salt and ceremonial herbs. Lotus Birth and Delayed cord clamping, allow for the flow of iron-rich blood from the placenta to the newborn & that boosts myelin levels. Increasing myelination of the motor system allows the infant to ‘do’ more; for example, lift the head, reach out, roll over & much later, crawl. It also banks iron stores for the first 4-5 months of life, so the baby doesn’t have iron deficiency. This ritual is common with home birth.
_
PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION Preparing for your placenta encapsulation before your birth: Pack bag and bring a small portable cooler. Contact or have your doula contact your placenta encapsulist within 6 hours postpartum and schedule a pick up time for your placenta. Most doulas will take the placenta keep it in the fridge and arrange the transfer with the encapsulist.

Some hospitals have policies about when you can take your placenta home so be sure you’re clear on the policies prior to your birth. Let your doctor & nurse know that you are keeping your placenta & they will put it in a container after examining it. The placenta should be packed on ice & placed in the cooler ASAP. Within 24 hours of your birth the placenta is picked up & your placenta pills will be ready within 3-4 days. Just in time for the drop in maternal hormones.

Birthful Birth Mantra Monday✨ 𝗔 𝟱-𝟭-𝟭 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

That 5-1-1 means that contractions are FIVE minutes apart, lasting for ONE minute or more, and this has been going on for ONE hour.

Depending on your provider, that number may be 3-1-1 or 4-1-1, which just means that they are looking for contractions to be 3 minutes apart or 4 minutes apart. This number is used as a guide for when it may be time to go to the hospital or birth center (if you are going anywhere) because that tends to be the character of contractions as you get into active labor.

Usually, that contraction pattern carries an intensity that is hard to miss! A 5-1-1 contraction pattern is not going to sneak up on you, and so you certainly do not need to waste your energy timing contractions that are spread out and not very intense. Trust your body, when it's time go, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄.

In fact, I go as far as to say that timing contractions is the systemic first intervention of labor, since it shifts the focus to a thinking brain, linear process that can actually keep it from advancing.

Instead, ignore early labor until you can't ignore it anymore, and if you are the birth partner, focus your energy on supporting the birthing person, making sure they are well-rested, hydrated, fed, and pampered. Also, make sure the bags are packed and ready, and that you've given your doula a heads-up.

Repost from my girl

It’s induction season and I’m seeing inductions being mentioned left and right to almost every single one of my clients.

Let me start off by saying that I am NOT against inductions. Inductions are long and can be exhausting but there are many situations that having an induction can be life-saving.

There are MANY reasons why an induction is not medically necessary for someone who has had a completely “healthy” pregnancy and showing no risk factors for self and baby. Birthing people should be able to make their own decision based on fact and not coercion.

For folks who do need inductions, I think the best way to go into the birth is to be knowledgeable and prepared. Ask questions, use BRAIN (, risks, alternative, intuition, nothing) and practice taking big deep breaths as patience is needed to get through an induction. ✨

Here are some helpful tips to get you through this holiday induction season!

Love, MF ❤️

***Disclaimer everybody and every BODY is different and assessment of inductions should be case by case.

HEALING THE CORE // So this time I wanted to try out belly binding. Though most belly binds & wraps are promoted to flatten the tummy, I was mainly interested in whether they would help with feeling stronger, more balanced & less squishy. This here is , a traditional Malaysian technique that exists in postpartum for a very long time.
The aim of Bengkung Belly Binding is to support the body’s natural healing process & improve posture while helping against Diastisis Recti, giving pelvic support, strengthening the lower back muscles & giving emotional & spiritual support.

After a vaginal birth, it‘s recommended to start within the first week postpartum, after a ceserean birth it depends on the healing of the scar so pls check with your midwife/OB. An important note is that belly binding is rooted in Malaysian postpartum tradition, meaning that the mother rests while wearing it in order to recover from pregnancy & birth. If used while doing chores & moving around too much, the bind can put too much pressure on the plevic floor & muscles which would be counter effective & can even be dangerous (pls do also check with your doctor or midwife in case you are dealing with high blood pressure or blood clots before using it). So again, it‘s all about resting!

I really liked the feeling it gave to my core. I felt stronger, more supported, less floating & more stable, exactly what I was looking for. It does for sure though take time & practice to actually bind it which is not always easy with a newborn (and older siblings) to take care of. Moreover, I think it would be nice to have someone else bind it to get it tighter and get that extra support but maybe I just needed more practice to really get the hang of it. That said, it did for sure feel good wearing it!
Have you tried Bengkung Belly Binding ? If so, how was your experience ?

We are so excited about our new offering that and I have been working on for months!

As you prepare for the birth of your baby, you may begin to ask yourself "how the heck am I going to feed this baby?" No. For real. We've been asked this exact question more than once. And although we might have an idea about what we are getting ourselves into it's helpful to have support along the way! As birth educators and lactation counselors we know the importance of education and support surrounding feeding your baby and have carefully put together two options for support for lactation. The first is a workshop offering in a group or one on one setting where we build a strong foundation and the second includes more individualistic care and in-person support. Both types of support set you up to feel confident about the decisions you make throughout your baby feeding journey!✨

If you're interested or want to learn more feel free to send us a DM or email us at [email protected].
