In my early 40s, I hit a wall. 😵‍💫

Disrupted sleep. Irregular cycles. Gut issues. Anxiety. Weight gain I couldn’t explain. All while juggling motherhood, a growing practice, and the pressure to hold it all together.

Perimenopause cracked me open.

So I did what I do best. I dug deeper. I used functional medicine, learned everything I could about hormones, and hired a coach to help me make the lifestyle changes I didn’t know I needed.

Today I’m more me than I’ve ever been. I lift heavy, eat carbs, and sleep like a queen, and live in a body that feels like home again.

And I want the same for you.

If perimenopause has cracked you open too, tell me where you are in the comments. You’re not alone in this, and it’s not a battle — it’s about getting to know our changing bodies and souls during an important change in our lives. 💜

Click below and I'll send you my free ALIGN worksheet: a simple daily practice to help you create a healthier, more compassionate relationship with your body.

https://drchristinemaren.com/align-worksheet-2/

Most women I work with are already incredibly disciplined. They're capable, responsible, and willing to do whatever it takes to feel better.

What's often missing isn't effort. It's alignment.

We've learned to ask more from our bodies than we give back to them. We push through exhaustion instead of resting. We care for everyone else before caring for ourselves. We keep achieving while our nervous system quietly asks for safety, support, and recovery.

That isn't a personal failure. It's how many of us were taught to live.

The ALIGN worksheet isn't another checklist or productivity tool. It's a simple daily practice for bringing your choices back into alignment with the kind of care your body has been asking for all along.

Because sustainable health isn't built by pushing harder. It's built by learning to work with your body instead of against it. 💜

Myth: "There's no point in checking thyroid antibodies."

I hear this all the time. So many people with Hashimoto's are told that once they're diagnosed, there's no reason to follow antibodies like TPO or TG, because they'll always be elevated.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

Antibody levels give us real insight into immune activity over time. They help us see whether the underlying drivers of the autoimmune process are improving. In other words: did the treatment plan actually move the needle?

I consistently see thyroid antibodies come down after we address:
✨ Gut health
✨ Nutrient deficiencies
✨ Chronic infections
✨ Hormones
✨ Sleep, stress, and nervous system regulation
✨ Nutrition and lifestyle

When a woman feels better and her antibodies decline, that's a win. This is exactly why I don't believe in managing Hashimoto's with thyroid hormone replacement alone. The goal isn't just to replace what your thyroid can no longer make. It's to understand why the immune system became hypervigilant in the first place, and support the whole person.

If you've been told there's nothing beyond medication, know that there is often much more we can do.

Have you ever had your thyroid antibodies checked more than once? Tell me in the comments 💜

Protein gets a lot of attention in midlife, and for good reason.

But what I see clinically is that many women increase protein while continuing to under-eat fiber.

That combination matters more than most people realize.

I start my day with 30+ grams of protein and 10+ grams of fiber. It’s a reliable way to support steady energy, fewer cravings, better digestion, and a more resilient metabolism.

💜 Click here if you want the breakfast I eat on repeat (plus 3 other options) to hit 30g protein + 10g fiber:

Help me celebrate my inspiring patient Rebekha, who reclaimed her health and energy after struggling for YEARS with chronic symptoms 👏🏼

✅ No more heartburn, and she's off Pepcid
✅ Sleeping soundly through the night
✅ More energy, fewer cravings, and no more crashing by 10am
✅ Hiking every week and feeling stronger than ever

When Rebekha came to us, she was completely drained. She was leaning on sugar to get through the day, losing sleep to heartburn and arthritis pain, and mostly just trying to survive.

None of that was a willpower problem. Her body was asking for help, and no one had looked at the whole picture.

So that's what we did. With a personalized plan to heal her gut, optimize her hormones, and build resilience, she's living with vitality and confidence again 💪🏼

I am so proud of her, and so honored to be part of her journey back to herself.

If you're running on empty, struggling with fatigue, sleep issues, or symptoms no one can explain, you deserve care that looks at the whole you.

If you’ve been told your only option for autoimmune disease is a lifetime of medication, please hear me. That is not the whole story.

I treat the root cause. That means getting curious about why your immune system started attacking in the first place, and then working through it, layer by layer. Gut health, food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies, toxins, stress, and hormones.

Your body is not against you. It’s responding to something, and our job is to find out what.

If this gave you a little hope, tell me in the comments, and share it with a woman who’s been told there’s nothing she can do about autoimmune disease. 💜

5 things I did to change my body in my 40s

I was already doing a lot of things right… cooking at home, eating mostly organic, being mindful of toxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

But my clothes didn’t fit, and I was struggling with bloating and clear signs of perimenopause.

So I made a few key shifts. Here are the five things that changed everything for me:

1. I started lifting weights with intention
I followed a program using progressive overload and tracked my lifts. I stopped wandering around the gym and made my training sessions more efficient.

2. I started eating more… not less
I stopped under-fueling my body and started eating like an athlete, with more protein and complex carbohydrates.

3. I regulated my nervous system
Meditation, dance, nature, ceramics, acupuncture, trauma therapy… I’ve done it all. You can’t out-train or out-supplement chronic stress.

4. I optimized my hormones
I started HRT, using transdermal estradiol and oral progesterone, and this supported everything from mood to gut health, sleep, and overall stability.

5. I addressed underlying gut issues… again
This part was not new for me, but it was necessary. Gut health is not a one-time fix. It is an ongoing part of the work, especially in perimenopause.

None of this is flashy. But this is the work. This is how you build a body that feels strong, stable, and supported in midlife. And this is exactly what we focus on with our patients. Not quick fixes, but foundational shifts that actually last.

If you are doing “everything right” and still not feeling like yourself… It might not be about doing more. It might be about doing the right things for this phase of life.

Which of these five feels like your missing piece? Tell me in the comments, and send this to a friend who's been doing everything right and still feels stuck.

⭐️ I started prioritizing FIBER… 30 grams per day to be exact.

For so many women in perimenopause, fiber is the missing piece for metabolism, blood sugar balance, and digestion.

The result? Building muscle and losing weight feels a lot easier 💪🏼

If you’re lifting 3–5x a week and moving most days, chances are you need more complex carbs, not less. That includes:

✅ Whole fruits (bonus: polyphenols that feed your gut microbiome)
✅ Starchy veggies like sweet potatoes, potatoes, squash, beets
✅ Gluten-free organic whole oats
✅ Rice (lower fiber but low-inflammation fuel for athletes)
✅ Legumes

✨ Need help hitting your fiber goal?

Comment here and I’ll send you 4 high-protein, high-fiber breakfast ideas (including what I eat most mornings) that you can easily meal prep this month for better metabolism, hormones, and gut health:
