Difficulty swallowing, called dysphagia, is common after a stroke or with conditions like Parkinson’s and dementia. It can show up as coughing during meals, a wet-sounding voice, or avoiding certain foods. When food or liquid goes down the wrong way, it can cause aspiration pneumonia, one of the leading causes of hospitalization in frail seniors.

If your loved one often coughs or chokes while eating, mention it to their doctor, who may suggest a swallowing evaluation. A caregiver can help by encouraging upright posture at meals, slow bites, and noticing early warning signs.

Did you know? Delirium is a medical emergency. 🚨

Sudden confusion or a rapid change in alertness is not “just dementia.” Delirium can be triggered by infection, dehydration, new medication, or pain, and it comes on over hours or days. It’s often treatable if the cause is found quickly, which is why a sudden change in behavior should never be brushed off.
