🤸 Wellness Wednesday: Why Stretching & Mobility Matter

Stretching and mobility aren’t just for athletes—they play an important role in everyday life. Whether you’re bending down to tie your shoes, reaching for something on a high shelf, getting out of the car, or carrying groceries, good mobility helps your body move efficiently and comfortably.

When joints and muscles become stiff, simple daily tasks can feel more challenging and may increase stress on other areas of the body. Regular stretching and mobility exercises can improve flexibility, maintain joint health, reduce aches and pains, and help prevent injury.

Taking just a few minutes each day to work on your mobility can make a big difference in how you move, feel, and function. Your future self will thank you! 💪

🦵 Know Your Knee

Your knee relies on several important structures working together to provide stability and smooth movement. The ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, and menisci help support the joint, absorb shock, and guide proper motion during walking, running, and daily activities.

When these structures become injured, pain, swelling, and instability can occur. Keeping your knees strong and mobile can help you stay active and reduce your risk of injury.

💻 Ergonomic Setup Tips for a Healthier Workday

Spending hours at a computer? Your workstation setup can make a big difference in preventing neck, back, shoulder, and wrist pain.

✅ Monitor at eye level
✅ Keep shoulders relaxed
✅ Elbows bent to about 90°
✅ Wrists in a neutral position
✅ Feet flat on the floor or a footrest
✅ Sit with your back supported

Don’t forget to take movement breaks every 30–60 minutes. Stand up, stretch, and give your body a chance to reset.

Small adjustments today can help prevent aches and pains tomorrow!

🦴 Osteoporosis Treatment: Building Stronger Bones

A diagnosis of osteoporosis doesn’t mean you should stop moving—it means movement becomes even more important. Physical therapy can help improve strength, balance, posture, and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.

Treatment may include:
✅ Weight-bearing exercises
✅ Strength training
✅ Balance training
✅ Postural education
✅ Fall prevention strategies

Combined with proper nutrition, calcium, vitamin D, and medical management, exercise is one of the most effective tools for maintaining bone health and independence.

Strong bones start with safe movement. 💪

🦴 Osteopenia vs. Osteoporosis: What’s the Difference?

Both osteopenia and osteoporosis involve a loss of bone density, but the severity differs.

📊 Bone Density (DEXA Scan) T-Scores:
• Normal: -1.0 or higher
• Osteopenia: Between -1.0 and -2.5
• Osteoporosis: -2.5 or lower

What Do These Numbers Mean?
A T-score compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult:
✅ A higher score means stronger bones.
⚠️ A lower score means bones are becoming thinner and weaker.

🦴 Osteopenia
Osteopenia is considered low bone mass and is often a warning sign that bones are weakening. While fracture risk is increased, it is not as high as with osteoporosis.

🦴 Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis occurs when bone loss becomes severe enough that bones become fragile and more likely to break, even from minor falls or everyday activities.

How Physical Therapy Can Help:
✔️ Improve balance and reduce fall risk
✔️ Increase strength and stability
✔️ Promote safe weight-bearing exercise
✔️ Improve posture and mobility

Taking steps early can help protect your bone health and maintain an active lifestyle.

Balance exercises can help improve stability, strength, confidence, and reduce fall risk as we age.

These simple exercises are a great way to stay active and support independence in daily life. Always make sure you have something sturdy nearby for support and only perform exercises if you feel safe doing so.
Consistency is key — small daily movement can make a big difference!
