It's Fine Motor Friday‼️
And today's tip is...

Midline crossing! Crossing the midline means crossing the imaginary line that divides the right and left sides of the body. It's important because it helps both sides of a child's brain communicate 🧠

Play that encourages crossing the midline of the body benefits a child's:
🌟brain growth and development 🧠
🌟hand dominance ✋️
🌟reading and writing skills 📖 ✏️ 📝
🌟independence in daily life skills 👗 🛁

Games and activities to try:
✅️Windmills: think gym class
✅️Infinity loops: trace or draw, make it a race track for toy cars
✅️Sticker pulls: place stickers on left foot, peel with right hand

Twister 🟡🟢🔴🔵 and Hot Potato 🥔 are also fun options for kids 🤸‍♂️🤾‍♀️🧘

🗣️It’s Talking Tip Tuesday…Getting Ready for Back to School: Let’s Talk About It! 🍎

As we get closer to a new school year, children may have big feelings and lots of questions about what going back to school will look, sound, and feel like.

As parents, we can help by talking about the transition before the first day — not just telling our children what will happen, but giving them opportunities to communicate how they feel about it.

✨Try Talking About…
What Will Happen? “First we will get dressed, then we at breakfast, then go to school.”

What might you see?
“You might see your teacher, friends, your classroom, and lots of backpacks.”

What might you hear?
“You may hear the school bell, lots of talking, or a loud cafeteria.”

How might you feel?
You might feel excited, nervous, happy, worried, or a little bit of everything!”

What questions does your child have?
Give them time to ask questions — or help them communicate questions if they need support.

❤️ For children who are non-speaking or limited verbally, try:

📸Pictures: Look at pictures of their school, classroom, teacher, bus, or playground
🧩Visual Schedules: Show the sequence of what will happen during the morning.
💬AAC: Model words/phrases such as school, teacher, friend, happy, worried, like, don’t like, stop, help, break, bathroom, all done.

🌱Most importantly… Don’t worry about having the perfect conversation. Your child may communicate through words, gestures, facial expressions, behavior, AAC, pictures, or play. Our job isn’t to make sure our children feel only excited about school. It’s to let them know:
💛Whatever you’re feeling, I’m here to listen, help you communicate, and support you.
⭐️A little preparation + lots of opportunities to communicate can make a big transition feel a little more predictable.

It's Fine Motor Friday!!🥳
And ALMOST back to school time ⏲️ 🏫 🫣

Today's tip: THUMBS UP for Cutting ✂️ 👍

Scissor safety and cutting skills can be tough for little ones. Next time you are practicing at home, pay attention to your child's grasp and positioning.

Here's a few tips:
-Position scissors with THUMB up 👍 while cutting. ALWAYS!
-Use the non-dominate hand to hold the paper (also with the thumb up)
-Keep the elbow in, close to the body while cutting (no chicken wings)
-Turn the paper, not the scissors

🍎 Talking Tip Tuesday: Back-to-School Conversations ✏️

As the new school year begins, one of the best ways to support your child’s communication is by making time to connect after school. ❤️

Instead of asking…
❌ “How was school?”
(You’ll probably hear… “Fine.”)

Try asking specific, open-ended questions like:
🚌 “What made you smile today?”
🎨 “What was the coolest thing you did?”
👫 “Who did you sit by at lunch?”
📚 “What was something new you learned?”
🤔 “Was anything tricky today?”
⭐ “What are you looking forward to tomorrow?”

💙 For minimally verbal children:

Communication doesn’t have to be spoken! Try:
✅ Showing pictures of school activities and asking them to point to what they did.
✅ Using a visual choice board (lunch, recess, music, reading, art, playground) and letting your child select activities from their day.
✅ Asking simple yes/no questions using thumbs up/down, head nods, or AAC.
✅ Modeling language on their AAC device while talking about the day.
✅ Looking through their backpack together and commenting on papers, artwork, or classroom notes.
✅ Celebrating every communication attempt—whether it’s a word, sign, gesture, picture, or button press.

💕 Remember: The goal isn’t to quiz your child—it’s to create a daily routine where communication feels safe, enjoyable, and meaningful.

Every conversation, no matter how big or small, helps build language, connection, and confidence.

Hoping every child and parent/caregiver has a safe and fun school year!! 🫶
