Get comfy fam, 🙏 it’s been 67 years since my last confession 🙏 :
I DREAD doing admin work for my business. Please miss me with the expense tracking, website updates, content creation, or literally anything that’s not in-person or hands-on work with clients. Seriously, I will put this stuff off until it starts f*cking me up, which of course perpetuates a vicious cycle of always feeling behind.
In my 10+ year career managing events, communications, and fundraising for non-profits, I was organized and motivated as hell (and good at it). But when it comes to the management side of *my own business* I’ve struggled to tap into that version of me.
So today I mixed things up. I put on a cute new fit, packed all my stuff - I do not pack light - and worked outside at on this beautiful ☀️ day.
Did I accomplish even half of what was on my work ‘to do’ list? Honey, no, I sure didn’t!
Did I get some of it, the most urgent things, done? YES.
Did I offer to take a picture of two old friends as they said their very cute goodbyes, who afterward told me they used to work together at DAFB’s mortuary and now one of them lives in Oklahoma with her adorable dog that I also got to meet, which then allowed me to thank them for their service and who were so grateful to have a photo of their reunion? Yes!
Did I briefly speak to a very friendly unhoused person a few times who complimented my sunglasses, wished me a beautiful day, and informed me the Wilmington Greek Festival starts tonight? Also, yes.
Did I enjoy a pistachio cream cold brew, feed the finches my chocolate croissant crumbs, and pop into to scope out another possible “work outside your house” spot…and buy a book📚? Duh.
The Lesson: Working from home has never been easy for me, and that’s ok. Home is where I want to slow down, chill out, be present with my family, feel safe. It’s where I can be soft. The business baddie is within me 💅…maybe just not within the four walls of my house.
