When you knock on a door, you don't get to decide who opens it.
Maybe it's a memory.
Maybe it's a sensation.
Maybe it's anger.
Maybe it's a protective response.
Maybe it's an unexpected physiological shift.
Maybe it's an urge to leave.
The question isn't:
“Why isn't my client giving me the response I expected?”
The question is:
“What is the system showing us right now?”

That is the difference between rigidly following a target and learning to follow activation. Continue learning on this week’s episode, When EMDR Isn’t Working: Follow the System [Beneath the Protocol Series], linked here: https://youtu.be/9M1HBT4kmdQ

Bring the cases that don't make sense.
Bring the moments where the plan changes.
Let's get curious together.

Access is not the same as readiness.

A client being able to tell you exactly what happened does not automatically mean their system is ready to process that material.

This distinction matters in EMDR and brain-based therapy because readiness is about more than memory.

It involves present-moment awareness, regulation, dual awareness, and the ability to remain engaged while approaching activation.

If this changes the way you're thinking about your EMDR sessions, the full conversation is waiting for you on the Zero Disturbance Podcast. Listen to When EMDR Isn’t Working: Follow the System [Beneath the Protocol Series] here: https://youtu.be/9M1HBT4kmdQ

Too much access. Not enough access. Which one are you more afraid of?
EMDR therapists can get caught between two fears:
“What if I flood my client?”
and
“What if nothing is happening?”
But what if both responses are information?

The newest Zero Disturbance Podcast episode explores what happens when we stop treating unexpected activation as something that automatically means we're doing therapy wrong—and start getting curious about what the client's system is communicating.
This is a conversation about EMDR, brain-based therapy, dissociation, activation, readiness, and clinical flexibility.

And if you're an EMDR therapist who wants to develop this kind of clinical flexibility in your actual cases, come join us inside The Consultation Program.

When a client's resource stops working, don't automatically assume they're failing.
What if you're simply asking an old resource to do a new job?

If EMDR is reorganizing the nervous system, then we should expect the system's needs to evolve.
That means a resource feeling stale might not be bad news.

It might actually mean:
✨ The system changed.
✨ The architecture reorganized.
✨ New access is needed.

This is why we don't believe Phase 2 is something you simply complete and leave behind.
You revisit it.
You reassess it.
You redesign access as the system evolves.
Because every time the architecture changes...

We may need a new way in. Explore this new way with us on this week’s episode, What If Your EMDR Resources Stop Working? [Beneath the Protocol Series]. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/zzxLvWV0gks

CALM IS NOT THE SAME AS CAPACITY.
This is one of the biggest reframes in today's episode.
Sometimes we become so focused on helping clients feel:
😌 Calm
🕊️ Peaceful
🌿 Relaxed
🛡️ Safe

That we forget to ask:
What does the system actually need right now?
Sometimes the answer is not calm.
Sometimes it's:
🔥 Courage
⚡ Agency
🧭 Clarity
🛑 Boundaries
🤝 Connection
🎈 Play

Positive doesn't always mean pleasant.
And effective EMDR Phase 2 work isn't about creating one specific emotional state. It's about helping the nervous system access the adaptive capacity it needs next.

“Can you still access your safe place?” might not be the most interesting Phase 2 question anymore.

Try this instead:
What does your system need access to right now?
Maybe the client already has safety.
Maybe safety has done its job.

And now they need:
⚡ Power
🧭 Discernment
🔥 Courage
✨ Self-trust
🛡️ Boundaries
We call this The Zero Disturbance Phase 2 Refresh.

We're not simply checking whether an old resource still exists.
We're reassessing what adaptive capacity the system needs next.

This is where EMDR becomes a much more dynamic conversation about access, nervous system organization, and brain-based therapy. Watch the full conversation of this week’s episode, What If Your EMDR Resources Stop Working? [Beneath the Protocol Series] here: https://youtu.be/zzxLvWV0gks

This is such an important distinction in EMDR Phase 2.
A client may begin treatment needing:
🛡️ Safety
And later need:
⚡ Agency
They may begin needing:
🌿 Soothing
And later need:
🔥 Assertiveness
They may begin needing:
🤝 Protection
And later need:
✨ Self-trust
The goal isn't to make one resource work forever.
The goal is to continue asking what the evolving nervous system needs access to now.

That's the difference between treating Phase 2 as a one-time intervention and understanding it as dynamic brain-based therapy. Come learn more about this difference in this week’s episode, What If Your EMDR Resources Stop Working? [Beneath the Protocol Series]. Watch here: https://youtu.be/zzxLvWV0gks

We install the calm place.
The protective figure.
The wise figure.
And then we check the Phase 2 box and move on.
But what if the entire point of EMDR processing is that the system changes?
If the nervous system changes, why would we assume the resources established at the beginning of therapy will always be the resources the client needs?

This is the beginning of a much bigger conversation about dynamic Phase 2 work and brain-based therapy. Continue watching and learning with this week’s episode, What If Your EMDR Resources Stop Working? [Beneath the Protocol Series]. Linked here: https://youtu.be/zzxLvWV0gks

Peak performance isn't about staying calm.
It's about being able to move through activation without losing access to yourself.
The nervous system can activate.

You can feel fear. You can feel pressure. You can feel uncertainty. And still remain connected.
Still adapt. Still recover. Still access the capacity you need.
That's nervous system flexibility.

And I think this gives us a much more useful way to think about performance enhancement in brain-based therapy.

We're not trying to create people who never get activated.

We're helping them develop more freedom in what they can access when activation happens.

“I'm confident” isn't the same thing as experiencing confidence!
This distinction matters.

In performance-focused EMDR, we don't necessarily want to stop at installing a positive cognition.
We can become curious about the **actual state**:

What does confidence feel like in the body?
What happens to breathing?
What happens to attention?
What becomes possible?
Can the person stay connected to themselves while being watched?
Can they access presence, curiosity, courage, creativity, or flow?

A positive cognition is something you believe.
A state is something your nervous system can inhabit.
That is one of the most interesting directions of brain-based therapy.
