When did survivor advocacy become a celebrity storyline?
As I listened to this conversation, I found myself thinking less about the people making headlines and more about the people these laws were created to protect.
One of the voices in this discussion belongs to Victoria Burke, a sexual assault survivor and the architect behind California Civil Code 47.1. What caught my attention was her concern that the focus could shift away from survivors and toward public image.
As someone who has survived SA, that concern resonates deeply with me.
The conversations we have about SA, harassment, victim advocacy, and survivor rights matter.
The laws we create matter.
The support systems we build matter.
But above all else, the people at the center of these conversations matter.
Every survivor deserves to be heard without their experience becoming a talking point, a headline, or a vehicle for someone else's agenda.
No matter where you stand on the legal battles, political debates, or public opinions surrounding any case, I hope we never lose sight of the individuals these protections were designed to serve.
Thank you, , for helping bring attention to a perspective that deserves to be part of the conversation.
Survivors deserve dignity.
Survivors deserve support.
Survivors deserve to remain at the center of the conversation.
